| A Canadian Mountie is shot and killed in an isolated valley in the Northwest Territories. The shooting is ruled as a 'hunting accident', but this explanation isn't good enough for the dead Mountie's son who is determined to find his Father's killers and bring them to justice. Constable Benton Fraser, also of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, begins his own private investigation of the 'accident'. He discovers that within the valley that his father was killed, are the dead bodies of several caribou which, according to a local Inuit, apparently died because they "drank too much." Discovering that a group of dentists from Chicago were recently in the area for a hunting trip, Fraser, accompanied by his deaf-wolf Diefenbaker, requests a transfer to the Canadian Consulate in Chicago so that he can gain information from the Chicago Police about the dentists. Fraser has no experience with big cities so when he visits the Chicago Police department, he inadvertently spoils an undercover sting operation being run by Detective Ray Vecchio who has been assigned to the case. Vecchio and Fraser don't exactly hit it off at first but Ray agrees to help and looks up the dentists' names. One of the dentists, who was supposedly on the trip, died several years ago so they dig a little deeper and find a picture of the 'dead' dentist who Vecchio instantly recognises, by his nose! Searching in the police computer they discover that the dentist is really Frankie Drake, a thug for hire. Vecchio heads off to a local bar with Fraser in tow, to ask some of his contacts where he can find Drake. Vecchio discovers that his undercover routine isn't exactly as polished as he would have liked. Drake turns up, but quickly escapes after shooting up the bar. Fraser and Ray eventually track Drake to Chinatown after using an interesting dirt tasting technique! They find that Drake's apartment is rigged with a bomb, which is triggered by Vecchio who is seriously injured in the resulting explosion. Details of Fraser's investigations get back to his superiors and Gerard, another Mountie and a friend of Fraser's father, arrives to escort Fraser back to Canada. While leaving the hospital, Drake makes another attempt to kill Fraser, but following an exciting and dangerous chase through a parking garage Drake is killed by Gerard. Back in Canada, Fraser discovers that a hydroelectric dam near the valley where his father was killed was built wrong. To correct their error, the dam's administrators were releasing the excess water at night causing massive flooding and killing the local caribou. Fraser discovers that it was Gerard who hired Drake to kill his father because Fraser's father had discovered the flooding and was going to blow the whistle. This would have been disastrous for the dam administrators who were about to begin a whole new phase of construction that would have made them very rich. Once they realised that Benton isn't going to keep their secret, Gerard is ordered to get rid of the Mountie. However, before he can eliminate Fraser, Vecchio arrives at Fraser's father's cabin to warn Benton of Gerard's involvement in the crooked dealings at the dam. When Gerard and his henchmen arrive, Fraser and Ray lead them on a wild chase through the Canadian wilderness on interesting forms of transport including dog sleds and snowmobiles. In the end, our boys prevail over the enemies and Gerard is arrested. Fraser's actions of turning in 'one of his own' makes him extremely unpopular among the RCMP in Canada, so he is again transferred to Chicago where he takes on the duties of the Deputy Liaison Officer at the Canadian Consulate. |
