Both medical and trauma patients can need IV fluids; or just a route to administer life saving drugs. We carry several types of IV fliuds on the ambulance. Normal Saline is one type and this is used very frequently on medical patients because it has the same salt concentration as human blood. Another kind of fluid we use is called Lactated Ringer's solution and this is used mainly for trauma patients. The best way to describe it is to say that it's like Gatorade for the blood. It contains some necessary electrolytes that may be lost when a patient bleeds. We also carry D5W or Dextrose 5% in Water. This is mainly used when a person's blood sugar drops too low. |

To the right is a Select 3 drip set. This is plugged into a bag of IV fluid and controls the rate of flow into a patient's blood stream. We prefer this type because it gives us the option of using a 10 drop, 15 drop or 60 drop set without changing out the tubing itself. |

A 10 drop set, seen here, would be used when a paramedic would want to administer the most amount of fluid in the fastest amount of time. This would usually be on a trauma patient who has lost a lot of blood or someone with dangerously low blood pressure for some other reason. |
