- Be sure that you read the letters in coorect order; for example, It is drudgery, not drudgery
- Do not insert letters that are not there; for example, it is caress, not carress
- Do not omit letters; for example, it is aghast. not agast
- Make ceratin that you have not found a word pronounced exactly like the one you seek; for example, it is correspondence, not correspondents
- Watch out for words with similar spellings; for example, is it ordinance or ordinance?
- Notice compound words with similar spellings; for example, one word, baseball; two words, dining room, or hypenated, half mast
- Choose the preferred spelling when more than one form is allowed. Check each dictionary's method of indicating whether varying forms of spelling are of equal or nearly equal standing, and which form is preferred.
