About This Site
WHO DESIGNED THIS WEBSITE? My name is Gary Grant, I am 23 years old, and I'm training to be a radiologist (doctor who specialises in body imaging) in Manchester, England. Originally, however, I am from a small village called Kinellar, near Aberdeen in Scotland. The space to the right will be for a photograph of myself, which I will put in right after my father returns my scanner! WHY FRANCOIS CEVERT? A very pertinent question you may think given:-
(i) he died almost five years before I was born and (ii) I am not French and have no connection with him. I suppose I could explain it thus:- I have always been into motorsport, from my earliest days I can remember watching the races with my father on TV. I am also a patriotic Scot, and until David Coulthard burst onto the scene I didn't really have anyone to support (lets not even think about Johnny Dumfries!). All I had were my dad's stories of his boyhood idol, Jim Clark and later, Jackie Stewart. When I got a bit older, I was reading about Jackie when I came across a story about his teammate - one Francois Cevert - who Stewart claimed of the 1973 German GP 'could have passed me anytime he liked'. Who was this guy? How come he was so good but he wasn't famous? I found out a little bit more and he became my favourite driver - fast, successful with women, flamboyant and very much of his time (is there really a racing driver who was more quintessentially seventies?) Even his helmet colours were the best I'd ever seen. Its my opinion that in a Tyrrell that was designed around his and Stewart's driving style he would have swept the 1974 Championship and become the first French World Champion. Yet the history books will record just one win and no poles beside his name. This website is an attempt to honour a sadly underrated driver, and to give an insight into one of the most colourful and flamboyant characters of an exciting yet deadly era. WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE WEBSITE? I hope, eventually, to have a site which will be quite big, but interesting to read. While there is a place for statistical websites, I'd rather this one was something people could visit, browse and enjoy. There will be four parts to the site:- 'The Man' section will tell Cevert's story in the form of (hopefully interesting!) anecdotes and short stories, rather than one long-winded and dry bio. I hope to have reports on every F1 race Cevert took part in - with pictures - and results for every other major race in his career available in 'The Races' section. The 'Gallery' is a showcase of some of the best pictures I have of or including Cevert, along with quotes from the man himself. I will have more pics when I get that damned scanner! The 'Links' page is a more generalised page, linking to the best and most useful F1 sites out there, with a bias towards sites on F1 and motorsports history. If and when I get all this finished, I may expand the site to give a more general overview of early 70s motor racing, and I plan to translate the whole thing into French, but we'll cross those bridges... In the meantime, you can monitor progress of the site via the 'latest update' box on the index page. HOW DO I CONTACT YOU? Feedback on the site (positive or negative), questions or litigations can be addressed to me at [email protected]. Please bear in mind that I am not stunningly computer-literate, so it is not really fair to complain about my lack of site-designing skills, and that I run this site for love of motorsport, not money... I am especially interested in hearing from anyone who feels that thy can contribute to the site in the form of info, photos or anecdotes. Anything, no matter how small, is appreciated!. Many thanks, and I hope you enjoyed my site. Main page this way
