A.1. Course Description:

Introduction to information systems as strategic assets of the enterprise utilized to achieve strategic advantage. Investigation is also made of the use of information systems at the tactical and support business levels. Management of information through database, spreadsheet, and software and web development tools.

A.2. Intended Audience:  MIS, Business, Management, majors

A.3. Course Objectives:

Students will learn to utilize data management software (Microsoft Access, Excel) and development tools such as Visual Basic .Net and FrontPage, gain an understanding of how companies and managers use information systems, and the importance of managers knowledge of technology.

The class consists of lecture and computer lab work where students will work with database, spreadsheet, and web software to design projects for each

Information Technology Presentation Choices (if you make more than two presentations, it will be extra credit):

  1. Course project (ex. Access, Excel , VBA, VB .Net)
  2. Managers and Information Technology

Choose a company (e.g. financial, drug company, retail, software), and investigate the role of the manager and how managers use information and information systems:

1.    What is the role and responsibilities of a manager?  (experience and s kills, job tasks of managers)

2.    How does information affect their decision-making?

3.    What should a manager know about technology and is their risk involved?

4.    How do managers use information systems (what kind of software/applications)?

5.    How does information affect business strategy?

  1. Choose a topic that is crucial for IT professionals to be aware of and explain to the class (ex. E-Commerce, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning, Knowledge Management (KM), Mobile Security, Open Source, Outsourcing, Wireless WANs and LANs)
