Did you know

Jim was 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed 165 pounds. His nickname was "Jimmy"

Jim has an older brother, John (2 years older) who became involved in Real Estate.

According to USA Today: The film Marooned opened a mere 124 days before the Apollo 13 mishap.

Two of Jim's daughters; Jamie and Kellie were born on December 4, only two years apart. Both of their middle names are Allen (after their late grandfather - Loraine's first husband)

Jim's heritage was Italian - Corsican to be more exact. Look at the end of Longstreet episodes, it makes reference to Corsican Productions. Thanks to M. Reese for this contribution.

Jim nearly went blind during the filming of Longstreet.
"I was so intent on the process (playing a blind man) that one day I burned my eyes pretty badly and had to see a specialist. Outside they're using natural lighting mainly. They take these aluminum reflectors and bounce the sun directly onto your face rather than using lights. And if you're playing someone who is blind, you can't squint, you can't blink, so I got x-ray burns in my eyes. I had been staring directly into the reflectors. I didn't realize it until my eyes started to get all-bloodshot. I can't go into any room with bright lights because my eyes tear up because I scarred the irises. Now we use lights instead of reflectors." Thanks to The TV Collector for this contribution

Even though Jim went to Yale and majored in English, he considered himself to be a "terrible speller" and he recruited Dick Cavett, (a year ahead of him) to help him write his themes." Thanks to The TV Collector for this contribution

While in his junior year at Yale, Jim was offered various movie roles, but turned them down in order to finish his college education.

The variation on karate was one of a long list of things Jim suggested to make Mike Longstreet a functioning human being. Thanks to Longstreet Fan for this contribution

Jim was the first choice to play Dr. Kildare in the 1961 TV Series, but he was committed to another series. Thanks to Internet Movie Database for this contribution.

Jim and Peter Chandler (Jim's HS Drama Teacher) often wrote to each - the letters always started with the salutation "Dear Snark" Lewis Carroll created the mythical Snark - "A peculiar creature that won't be caught in a conventional way." Thanks to the Longstreet Fan for this contribution.

Jim once stated that he injured his hip in a helicopter crash in Vietnam (he was a Marine), which is why he had to stop playing tennis. Thanks to The TV Collector for this contribution.

Jim took up skydiving because he was afraid of heights.

Jim played opposite blind people in two "Mr. Novak" episodes. Karl Malden in "Cat O'Nine Tails" was an ex-reporter who was blinded in an accident, and so was John Brent's "Skipper" in "Beneath The Planet of The Apes." So was Jim destined to play a blind investigator in "Longstreet?" One would think so....
