Solving Gabe's Puzzle: Behavioral
Behavior is the thing that sets most of the people on the spectrum apart from their peers.  This behavior is Irrational, aggressive, baffling and often irritating.  There are many behavioral based strategies that have been used effectively like; ABA- Applied Behavioral Analysis, Floortime, Social stories and Im sure more that I do not know about.  Behavioral interventions are essential; however it is important to understand the focus of each one.  I am fortunate enough to have my son in a school which provides him with appropriate behavioral support.
Gabe's School is a Blessing
Difficult Behaviors, is in my opinion, are symptoms and not the problem.  With the help of  a Positive Behavioral Support expert we graphed Gabe's behavior and found patterns.  Some patterns had to do with his diet and others had to do with Environmental inputs.   I have had tremendous success at correcting Gabes stimms and his outbursts by learning some preventive strategies and some reactionary strategies. I am not saying he is cured but his behavior is managable.
First I found the wonders of
Sensory integration. I learned that I could calm his meltdowns using a swing or by having him stand on his head.  Then I discovered that with a sensory diet I could prevent many of his outbursts and improve his understanding of the world around him.  That is Gabe is becoming more integrated to the world he lives in because his Central nervous system is slowly developing.  I emphasize slow Remember to celebrate every accomplishment.
  Now I am learning about
biomedical interventions I have seen the effects of eliminating additives like color and preservatives.  They actually cause an opium-like effect on my son.  There are studies on this effect Called Salicylate intolerance I dont completely understand it yet and I will post the most useful information, on the diet page, once I better understand it.
DAN- Defeat autism now and the autism research center are two good sources of information if you want to start there.
