WHAT I'M READING

LOS ALAMOS - by Joseph Kanon

WHAT'S IN MY CD PLAYER

CLASSIC QUEEN - Queen

July 16 - 18 1999

The evening heat has let up a bit. I didn't need the damp cloth last night, and not a moment too soon. I think my shoulder was starting to prune up.

I still didn't fall asleep till late. My cats insisted on scratching at their food in an effort to cover it up. And since their food dishes are in the hall outside my bedroom door right now (sprayed the kitchen to get rid of flying bugs, so that room was shut off from the kitties), the scratching made it very difficult to doze. That's what I get for being sensitive to noise. Thanks boys!

Life is good. I just found out that my nearby news-stand carries Modern Lounge. It's a brand new magazine (in it's second issue now) that celebrates stuff like swing music, film noir, cigars, cocktails and all things lounge-ish. What? you ask, shocked. Carol's into lounge? Well, yes and no. I'm not exactly a lounge aficianado, but I've always loved swing music (ever since I was a wee nipper) and liked film noir. I like a good frou-frou martini (blasphemy, I know, but the classic is a bit too dry for me). Not so much the cigars, the only thing I've ever puffed is the rare joint or bong at parties. I just don't like inhaling smoke.

Then why am I so excited about finding Modern Lounge? Because it's a nice magazine, with glossy pages, a good layout and fun, informative and (above all) readable content. It's always nice to find something I can actually read, since too many of the mags out there are just "cooler-than-thou" puff pieces under the thin guise of information/entertainment.

And because two of the people who started it are high school friends, Dave and Bianca Elsensohn. (I used to have a thing for Dave back in high school. Shhhh.) When Modern Lounge first started, it could only be found in the odd Barnes and Noble, usually in Tarzana or Santa Monica. The fact that news-stands are carrying it signals that the distribution is growing, which means that the demand is growing. (That what it means to me, anyway. They could just have an aggressive sales person.) And that makes me very happy for Dave and Bianca.

It also means I finally have my very own copy...

The weekend is just about here. Yea! This has been such a long week that I'm sooo glad it's finally over. Not a bad week, just a long one. I'm looking forward to hanging out with friends on Satuday night and family on Sunday. Tonight, I think I'll just hang out at home, or maybe take myself out to dinner and a movie. Hmmm, I still haven't seen An Ideal Husband, Run Lola Run, or South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. So everybody, enjoy your weekend! Until Monday, folks!

Take care!
