What is a Wav?
The basic file format for sounds on the web is called WAV. These files can be read by any browser on any machine and don't require a plug in. The problem with this format is they generate big files so they are better for short clips of sounds. Here we are only concerned with the fun we can have with them in chat rooms, e-mails and IM's. You may have seen people typing words into a chat room which don't seem to make sense. They might type {S rumble and before you know it other chatters are typing words with an { s in front. The {s means a sound is being played and if you have that sound on file you will hear it. Most PC users have a number of wav sounds on file without really being aware of it and these files may be scattered all over their computer as part of various programes, games etc. AOL users have a folder for aol sounds, for example the welcome sound. When you begin collecting wavs, this is where you keep them so that you can hear and play them. For further advice on downloading a wav see instructions on how to download a wav.
Once you have collected a few wavs, by downloading from web pages, e-mail exchange etc. you can hear and play them whilst participating in chat in an AOL chat room, you can also e-mail them to friends, Happy Birthday being a very popular one. It is also possible to play wavs in an IM if both parties have the appropriate software such as wavman or BPS (see wavman links scattered throughout these pages) The first thing to check before you begin down the addictive path of wav collecting is that you have your chat room sounds enabled, that you do have a sound card installed and your speakers turned on and that the wavs you wish to hear and play are in the aol sounds folder. If you decide that you need an organiser such as wavman they come with lots of features, one of which lets you hear any wav no matter where it is on your drive. Another extremely popular feature of these add on "power tools" is the multicoloured font known as a fade. To enable chat room sounds simply go to aol preferences, click chat and tick enable chat room sounds. To play a wav in a chat room Type {s followed by the name of the wav. You will see as your collection grows that an organiser makes this a speedier process as you just select the wav and it sends it into the room for you. You can even group your wavs...I digress, I am not on commission for wavman, see for yourself with their free trial. A tip, if you are sending a wav and wish to include text close of the wav i.e. {S welcome} to the room You will often see people exchanging wavs in e-mail and if you recieve one check that it is a wav file (it will end in .wav) wavs cannot carry virus as they are not an executable file
