It was a week later and Kayla was feeling alot better. The doctor had let her leave the hospital the day after she was admitted under the condition that she would take at least three nights off to rest, and that she would take the antibiotics that he was giving her. She was taking them faithfully, three times a day. Its not like I have a choice, she thought. AJ had barely left her side since she collapsed on stage.
At the moment, AJ was at a photo shoot with the rest of the guys. Kayla was glad to have the little bit of alone time and was sitting on her hotel bed flipping through a teen fan magazine. She wasnt paying any real attention until she spotted the words "Backstreet Boys" across the top of a double page spread. As she stopped to look, she saw that it was a photo shoot of the guys. Laughing, she realized that it was a retro photo section of the guys back in 1995 and 1996. Kayla couldnt believe how young Nick looked, just like a little kid. Howie looked different, she noticed and saw that Brian and Kevin looked pretty much the same. Her eyes finally rested on a young AJ. "Oh my god.", she said out loud as she started laughing uncontrolablly.
"Whats so funny?" Turning around, she saw AJ standing in the doorway. She pushed the magazine behind her back and gave him a straight face. "Nothing.", she told him, giggling. He crossed the room and jumped onto the bed, pinning Kayla underneath him. Kayla felt a rush of excitement shoot through her body because of his closeness. "Would you get off me?", she said with no conviction. She didnt even bother to try pushing him off of her. His face was only inches from hers and Kayla closed her eyes, knowing what was coming next. She felt his lips press down on hers and was instantly lost in his kiss.
"Dont let me interrupt you guys, I just need my bathing suit. Nick and I are gonna take a dip in the hotel pool. You guys wanna come?" Still pinned underneath AJ, Kayla had not seen Chel come in. "Want to? Could be fun." She told him with a sly smile.
Fifteen minutes later, Kayla was opening the door to the indoor pool room. She laughed at the scene that lay before her. Brian was perched on top of Kevins shoulders and together they were splashing Paula and Lisa, who were lounging on one of the deck chairs. Nick was in the water, holding onto a pleading Chel. "Nick! Put me down!" Laughing, Nick pretended to let her go and Kayla heard her friend shriek. "NO! Stop it Nick! Dont put me down!"
Kayla continued across the room to the other side of the pool and sat down on a lounge chair. "Wheres AJ?" she asked, not seeing him anywhere. Almost as if answering her, Kayla heard a loud scream echo throughout the room. Confused, she looked up and saw a blur go running past her. Before she could say or do anything, she felt the cool water splash onto her skin as "the blur" cannonballed into the water.
Laughing, Kevin looked at Kayla. "I think we found AJ." Kayla got up and walked to the edge of the pool to see if she could see where he ended up. To her surprise, the pool was empty and still and she couldnt see him anywhere. Panic started to rise in her head. "Whered he......" She didnt get to finish her question as AJ jumped up out of seemingly nowhere and pulled her into the water before she could protest. "What the hell? AJ!!! You are SO dead!!" She threatened as she reached the surface of the water. She saw his retreating figure and her his pleading cries to the guys. "Help me you guys! Shes gonna come after me!"
Kayla crossed the pool, catching up to him with no problem. Grabbing his arm, she pulled him closer and kissed him. She heard brian yell, "AW, come on you two. All we ask for is one hour without you guys liplocked. Is that too much to ask?" AJ broke away long enough to say, "Yup." Kayla watched as Lisa pulled Brian into a similar kiss and laughed to herself at the very pleased look on his face. Focusing back on AJ and the kiss, she couldnt believe how great she felt. Its so romantic, she thought. She loved the way the water felt on her skin and AJs hands on her arms and her back. kaylas thoughts were interrupted when she felt a downpour of ice cold water fall over her head.
Chel looked down at the shocked expressions on her friends faces and couldnt believe that she had just done that. It had been Nicks idea to dump buckets of water over there head and knowing it would be hilarious, she decided to go along with it. She knew that Kayla would get her back and tried to defend herself. "Im sorry Kay! Nick made me do it!" Nick gave her an innocent little smile and said, "Dont believe her you guys, It was all her idea!" Chel stared at him, shocked then got an idea. Laughing she pushed Nick into the pool, but didnt expect for him to grab her hand as he went in.
Kayla watched, amused, as Nick pulled Chel into the water. Oh man, we are insane, she thought. After a few more minutes, the four of them all got out of the water and sat with the rest of the group. They talked for a little while when a thought occured to Kayla. "Oh my god, do you guys realize where we are gonna be performing tomorrow night?" Kayla couldnt believe that she hadnt realized it sooner. She watched as everybody was looking at her like she was insane. "Um, i think a city called Syracuse. Why?" Kevin answered her. She saw that both Chel and AJ recognized that as her hometown and she told the others, "Thats my hometown. I get to see my family tomorrow!"
AJ, who was sitting next to Kayla, looked at her and smiled. "So, does this mean i finally get to meet the family?" Kayla laughed and said, "Um, well, yeah. I guess all of you will be seeing them. They are coming to the show." Kayla was now in deep thought, trying to mentally prepare herself for the next day.
The next day, Kayla looked down at her watch and saw that it was quarter to noon and she was still sitting on the tour bus on the way towards Syracuse. They had just passed through Utica and she was getting very nervous. After the pool party the night before, the group had moved itself to the venue to get ready for the show. Kayla had a rough night, making more mistakes than she wanted to admit. She blamed it on being as lost in thought as she was. As soon as the show was over, there was a rush to get back to the buses, since they did have to make a two state trek in less than twenty-four hours. Kayla was still very tired from the long night, but pushed that aside since she was on the phone with her mom.
"We're almost there. Yeah, we just got through Utica. Well i think it was. What? Of course. No, not yet. How many total? Well, she better behave. I know she does, but hes a normal guy. Alright, yeah. In a little while. I love you too mom. Bye!" Kayla rolled her eyes as she threw the phone back into her back pack. She saw that Chel and the other dancers were laughing at her. "This is going to be an interseting night!", she told them.
It was three hours later and Kayla was sitting on the stage at the Carrier Dome. They had just finished the run-through and she was watching everybody try their best to wind down a little bit. AJ was running up and down the aisles of the empty arena, Nick and Chel were sitting near her lost in conversation, Brian and Kevin and two of the dancers were attempting a serious game of basketball and Howie was on the phone. God I am so nervous, she thought as a familiar voice broke through her thoughts. Kaaaaaaayyyyyyyylllllllllllaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" She heard as she felt somebody playfully attacking her from behind. Kayla turned and hugged her sister tight. "Ryan! Ive missed you so much! Have you been behaving for Mom?" She gave her the best big sister look that she could and ended up laughing. Seeing her mom walking toward her, Kayla ran to her and gave her a big hug. "Ive missed you mom!" They hugged for a few minutes until Kayla heard somebody clearing there throat behind her. She turned and saw AJ looking at her expectantly.
She walked over to him and slipped her arm around his shoulder. "Mom, Ry, this is Um, oh man, i forgot his name." Ryan walked over to her and whispered in her ear, "kayla, thats AJ." Kayla laughed when she saw the shocked expression on AJs face. "Baby, you know im just playing. This is AJ, the pain that I am dating." Kaylas mom laughed as AJ took her hand and kissed it. "I can see where Kayla gets her good looks from." Kayla rolled her eyes as he said this. She watched as her mom mouthed to her, "Hes nice, i like a charmer." Ryan walked slowly over to him, still afraid to approach an actual "Backstreet Boy".
"Ryan, he doesnt bite. Go on would you?" Well, sometimes he bites, Kayla thought to herself but thats not something i wanna share. She watched as her sister walked up to AJ. "Are you really my sisters boyfriend?" She asked him. He smiled and picked her up into a hug. "Yup, I am, I love your sister." "Cool....um...can you introduce me to Kevin?" Kayla held back a snicker and saw AJ wink at her as he led Ryan over to Kevin. He came walking back over wearing a huge smile. "AJ, i feel bad sticking him with a ten year old." Kayla watched as Kevin was sitting down and talking to Ryan, who had an "OMG, im going to die" look on her face.
Kayla quickly ran through the rest of the introductions and told her mom and sister that they had to go get ready for the show. She gave her mom one last hug, and told her to enjoy the show. "I will see you guys again after the show." "love you Kayla, and Im very proud of you." Kayla saw the admiration in her mothers eyes and was happier than she ever thought she could feel. She grabbed AJs hand and the two of them walked toward the dressing room. On the way, they were stopped by one of the guys from the Backstreet Boys management firm. "I just found out, You will be shooting the video for Dont Wanna Lose You Now next thursday. Be ready!" Kayla looked at AJ. "Oh my god, My first video shoot." AJ laughed as Kayla chattered on and on happily about being in her first video. All that Kayla knew was that next Thursday couldnt come soon enough.
