Oh my god!! Im so nervous!!" Kayla was nervous because she was at an audition. Auditions werent usually a big deal for her, but this one, she knew, could be her big break. Her and her best friend, Chel were waiting to be called to audition to be a Backstreet boy dancer. She looked over at Chel and smiled. She couldnt believe how close they had become over the last year and a half. They had met when they were both taking night classes at the community college.
Chel smiled back at Kayla. She was also thinking about how they met. When they first met, you would have thought they were about to kill each other. Talk about a personality clash, she thought. Chel was more quiet and reserved and Kayla was the complete opposite. She looked at her best friend, who was pacing the floor of the room. She stood 6' tall and had light brown hair. She was wearing a somewhat normal outfit, a shiny blue halter top and matching leggings. Then she looked down at her own Adidas shirt and sweats. Everything is like that for us, she thought. We dont even like the same music. Chel loved all things pop, and was an avid top 40 listener. Kayla loved anything that you could mosh too, Limp bizkit and nirvana being her favorites.
"Earth to Chel. What are you thinking about?" Kayla asked. She saw how lost in thought her friend was. Chel looked at her and got a sly smile on her face. "Oh, just thinking about how hot Nick is." Kayla looked at her friend and groaned. Chel loved the Backstreet boys, knew everything about them. Kayla really didnt see what she saw in them. If i get this, im going to be spending the next few months touring with a bunch of boys, she thought. The job consisted of going on the Boys latest tour with them and maybe a couple of videos. In short, Kaylas dream come true. She had been dancing all of her life. As soon as she could walk, she wanted to dance. She would, or so her mom said, watch the videos on MTV and mimick their dance moves. She had performed at various talent shows in the area and loved the thrill of performing. yeah, she thought, this would be my big break.
A voice broke through her thoughts. "Will the following people please follow me? Jenni Robertson, Sarah Stevens, Danielle Peterson, Kayla Davis, Alexandra Falder,..." Chel and Kayla continued talking, but Chel gave Kayla a strange look. She looked at her and mouthed, Here we go. When kayla still looked lost, Chel laughed, "They called us silly. Our names, its our turn!" The two of them followed the rest of the group down the hall and into a big rehearsel room. The lady introduced herself as Fatima, the boys choreographer. She explained thet they were the last group that would be auditioning. First she would run through the dance steps with them, then they would do it on their own.
Kayla watched her very closely. Shes great, she thought, following her moves. The dances didnt seem all that hard and soon, she was giving it her all. When ever she danced, she always danced her ass off. It was the one thing that she was always a hard worker about. Then, Fatima announced, it was time for them to do it on their own. Kayla felt ready. The opening tones of the song, which was called Larger Than Life boomed in the little space. Kayla felt herself get lost in the music, as she always does while shes dancing. Everything around her disappeared, it was just her and the music. They ran through about five other songs and then about forty-five minutes later, the audition was over.
Kayla walked over to were Chel had sat down and they started talking. Fatima had called all of the other girls into the room and was about to make an announcement. "First of all, i want to thank you all for coming out here today. I saw alot of talent and i think all of you have what it takes to become great dancers. But i have chosen the five girls that i think would best represent my style. Will these five girls please stay where you are?" She began calling off names.
Kayla wasnt really paying attention, being in deep conversation with Chel. She stopped when she noticed that Chel was looking at her funny. "What?" she asked her. Chel laughed, then said, "She just called you. Your in!!!" Kayla just shook her head, the full effect had not sunk in yet. "No she didnt, dont joke about.....She really did?? OH MY GOD!!!!!" Kayla started jumping up and down, hugging her friend. She stopped when she thought of something. "What about you?" Chel stopped her, saying"Kay, you know i only came for moral support. Im not a dancer. your the dancer here, this is your turn to shine!! And besides, your in now!! Youve got to get in good with THE Nick Carter!!" they both laughed at this, then Chel said,"Alright, im going to leave, youve got a little bit of stuff to still take care of yet. Call me as soon as you get home." She gave Kayla another hug, said "Have fun!!" Then walked out the door.
Kayla watched her friend walk out the door, then focused her attention on what Fatima was saying. They were going to take a ten minute break, then come back to discuss some details about the tour and a few legal-type things. Kayla got up and decided to go in search of something to drink. She walked down the hall and spotted a vending machine. She put in her money and pressed the button. When nothing happened, she pressed the button again. Dammit, she thought, all i want is a soda, is that too much to ask?
She looked down the hall and saw that it was deserted. She looked at the vending machine and kicked it with all of her might. "Hey!! You shouldnt kick that! You should always be nice to vending machines!" a male voice said from behind her. Kayla didnt turn around, but answered back,"It wasnt being very nice to me!" The voice laughed and Kayla turned around.
The guy was very cute, but in a strange way. he was about 5'10" tall and had brown hair. Well, it would have been brown except for the fact that his tips were dyed a bright red color. He wore shades and alot of silver jewelry. Kayla smiled when she saw that he was wearing sunglasses in a bright hallway in the middle of the day. Knowing that she shouldnt say anything, she decided to comment. "Since your wearing shades, your either recovering from a hangover, or your a vampire. Both being very bad." The guy gave her a killer smile, then took of his shades.
Kayla was amazed when she saw his eyes. They were beautiful. He had brown eyes, that were framed with very long lashes. They were very deep and Kayla was afraid that she would get lost in them. He went up behind her, then pushed a button on the machine. Almost instantly, a can of soda popped out. He picked it up and handed it to her. "All it takes is charm." Again, he gave her that killer smile. He was about to ask her name, but was interrupted by somebody calling his name.
"Bone!! There you are, Timas been looking for us. Weve got to go." Kayla noticed the guy, who was very tall and very blond. He looks familiar, she thought. Then she looked at her new found friend. "So, your name is Bone. Thats very interesting. Ive got to get going too. Maybe i will see you around. Bye bone!" She said with a small smile playing on her lips. She turned back towards the rehearsel room, not noticing that "Bone" had to be dragged into the other room by his friend.
Kayla went back into the room and Fatima was talking about what they would be doing for the next hour. She said that the Boys were going to come and say a quick hello to all the new dancers. Then they would go over what the touring schedule would be like, and also the rehearsing schedule. Wow, this is the "big-time" Kayla thought. She hadnt noticed the five guys enter the room. She looked up and looked each one over. The first one was tall, dark and handsome. He had very nice eyes, she noticed. She moved on to the next guy. He was kind of on the short side, with dark hair and dark eyes. his hair was pulled back into a small ponytail. She moved on. The next guy was not much taller than the last, but he was wearing a huge smile on his face. He had light brown hair and blue eyes. He seems cool, she thought. She looked at the next guy. He was tall, with blond hair and striking blue eyes. he looks familiar, she thought. She couldnt think of where she had seen him before. then she moved her eyes to the last guy and couldnt believe her eyes.
She saw his red-tipped hair, and his silver jewelry. He had put the shades back on, so she couldnt see his eyes. When she looked up, she saw him get that killer smile on his face. "Watch out for her," He said, pointing at Kayla, "She beats up on poor defenseless vending machines." The rest of the guys broke out in laughter at his corny joke. She wasnt about to let him have the final word. "And this guy here is going for the record of how much jewelry somebody can wear at one time." Satisfied with herself, she leaned back and smiled at him smugly. Fatima was looking from Kayla to the guy. "I see youve already met AJ. The other stooges are kevin, Howie, Brian, and Nick." Kayla thought to herself, thats why he looks so familiar, thats Nick Carter. I gotta tell Chel that he looks damn hot in person.
The rest of the afternoon was very relaxed, and Kayla payed close attention to what Fatima was telling her. She was also aware of the fact that AJ had been staring at her when he thought she wasnt looking. Childish games, she thought, wonderful. The girls had danced for the boys and they must have liked what they saw because they clapped and cheered for them. After that, Fatima told them the rehearsel schedule, which would begin in a couple of days. she congradulated them again, then told them that she would see them bright and early in a few days. Bright and early? Kayla thought, and she groaned. She was not a morning person. She began to gather up her stuff to leave and in her hurry, almost knocked over AJ, who had come up behind her.
"Um, hi again, and bye! Ive got to leave." She stared at him, as he stood right in her path. "Was there something else?" He took off his shades again and she saw his eyes were sparkling. "Can i walk you to your car?" Hell yeah, Kayla thought, as she stared into his eyes. She managed to control her thought down to a simple,"Yeah sure. i could use a big strong body guard and if you come, your bodyguard will too." AJ looked down, wounded and Kayla automatically felt bad. "Im sorry, Ive got this habit of saying the first thing that comes to my mind. Usually though, that means not thinking before i speak. I didnt mean to say that, I would love for you to walk me to my car."
AJ smiled, then said,"Hey, i wanted to tell you were wonderful in there. Your a hard worker." Kayla looked at him, then said,"We all are hard workers. im just curious to see how our first rehearsel with you guys will turn out. Im sure it will be interesting. The truth will come out!" They both laughed and Kayla realized they were at her car. "Well, AJ, im here. Im glad i had such a friendly and handsome bodyguard walking with me." AJ looked at her in shock, as he thought, wow, she really does speak her mind, maybe i have a chance with her. Since he first saw her in the hallway, he hadnt been able to remove her from his mind. "Glad to be of service. You know, i was wondering, Could i get your phone number?" Kayla looked at him, shook her head and said,"Sure, I'll give it to you, but do you realize that you wont need it for long? Were gonna be seeing each other every single day. Im gonna be touring with you remember?" She grabbed his hand, then wrote her number on it. Getting into her car, she said, "You owe me one, Bone!! See you soon." She drove away, leaving him staring after her.
Kayla pulled into her apartments driveway. She parked the car, sat back and thought to herself, what am i doing? I just met this guy. She got out and walked to her apartment, all of her thoughts on AJ and his beautiful eyes. This cant be happening. She thought as she walked into Chel's room to give Chel all the details about what happened after she left. She also needed information on AJ. And Chel would be the best person to give it to her. She sat on Chel's bed and settled in for a long gab session.
