Beep beep.....beep beep....beep beep....Kayla reached over and hit the button on her alarm. She could not believe she had to get up already. She was still in her bed, with the covers up over her head. She dared herself to look outside her covers, and groaned when she saw it was still dark outside. This iscruel and unusual punishment, getting up this early, she thought as she let herself get out of bed. She yawned and stood up, thinking about the day ahead of her. It was the first day of rehearsing with the Boys themselves. Over the last week, she had gone to three ealry morning practices. They had practiced the moves themselves, but now was the day they were going to put it all together.
Kayla went into the bathroom and turned on the water. She knew that a quick cold shower would wake her up. After her shower, she threw on a pair of black sweat pants and her ADIDAS shirt, giving herself a glance in the mirror. Deciding that she looked as good as she was going to first thing in the morning, she left.
Kayla pulled into the parking lot of the studio, about to claim the spot she had parked in all week long. As she was pulling in, a car sped up behind her and grabbed HER parking spot, nearly slamming into her car. UGH, i hate morning drivers, she thought. She parked, and jumped out of the car, prepared to bitch out the driver of the other car. She looked up and started over towards the silver Expedition. She couldnt believe when AJ jumped out, with a big smile on his face.
"What the hell were you doing? You almost killed me!!" She watched as his face fell as she yelled at him. She couldnt believe that he could look that good so early in the morning. He started walking towards her. "Im sorry. Hey, were both a little early, let me make it up to you?" He motioned towards his truck. She looked at him like he was insane. "After you almost killed me, you want me to come take a ride with you?" "Yup. I need breakfast and i figured that you could use some too." He smiled at her and she knew she wouldnt be able to say no.
Kayla walked over to his truck and got in. She watched as AJ walked around and got in. God, he smells good, she thought. Then she yelled at herself, saying to stop with those feelings, she didnt even know him. She must have been staring at him a little longer than she had wanted to because she heard AJ say,"If you want, I can get you a picture. I know ive got some in the back somewhere." She looked at him and saw his eyes were shining. She quickly looked down at her hands, embarassed. She wasnt used to feeling so nervous around somebody, and she realized that she was speechless. Not good, she thought.
She heard AJ laughing and looked at him. "Whats so funny?"
"Nothing. I just think its cute how your face can turn so red, so fast." He paused as she looked down at her hands again. "Kinda like right now." Kayla just sat there, completely speechless. She couldnt even think of any witty comebacks. What is wrong with me, she thought. She looked out the window and was releived to see they were pulling into a McDonalds parking lot. If there was one thing she loved, it was Mickey Ds, morning noon and night. She looked over at AJ and smiled. "I love McDonalds!" AJ said, echoing her thoughts.
Before they got out, AJ through his shades on and pulled his hat way down. "Protection" he said. Kayla was kind of confused, but realized he could get recognized. They walked in, and Kayla noticed that it was almost completely empty, aside from a few older couples. All the normal people are still in bed, she thought. They walked up to the counter, where a teenage girl was taking orders.
"May I help you?" She asked them. "Yeah, let me get two sausage McMuffins, two hash browns, and a medium iced tea. Shes with me too." He added, looking at Kayla. Kayla was laughing at the list of food that was all for AJ, and was surprised when he said that. "AJ, I cant let you pay for my food." She watched as he got a strange look on his face. "5...4...3...2..." He counted quietly. He didnt get to finish, because the girl behind the counter let out an ear splitting shriek. Kayla watched her in amazement, then looked at AJ, who had a huge smile on his face.
"OH MY GOD!!!! Are....you.....really...AJ.....McClean..of.....the........Backstreet... Boys??" She asked him in between the hysterical sobs she was trying to control. Kayla was glad that it was nearly empty and was amazed at how calm AJ seemed to be. She began watching how he handled the situation.
AJ stood beside Kayla, shaking his head. He had that killer grin on his face as he began talking to the girl. "Hey baby, calm down. Whats your name?" He loves the attention, Kayla thought as she kept watching. The girl managed to calm down a little bit, and she told him that her name was Jennifer. The girls boss told her to go sit down to control herself and AJ went over and sat with her. They talked for a few minutes. Kayla heard AJ joke with her, saying that if he gave her an autograph, would she get him a couple of happy meal toys. When he said this, he looked at Kayla and winked. She had to laugh. She was in awe at how at ease he was with the fans.
She watched as he stood up, gave the girl a hug, then motioned Kayla to the door. Once inside his truck, Kayla told him how amazed that she was at how well he handled that. "You havent seen anything yet. That was nothing." He told her. "Are you guys really that famous?" She asked, thinking it was a reasonable question. She looked over at AJ to see he was looking at her amazed. "You really havent heard much about us have you?" Kayla explained to him," I dont really listen to pop music, thats my best friends department. I know that she is in total love with the Backstreet boys, but me, i listen to stuff like Limp bizkit. I do go through recent hits to find new songs to dance to, but dont really pay attention to the artist." She watched as he started rummaging around in the back. He pulled out a cd and popped it in. "Oh My God, Were back again.....Brothers, sisters everybody sing" Kayla realized that she knew this song, she had used it in a show about a year ago. She looked at AJ.
"Dats me bay-buh!!!!" He told her and she had to laugh. they pulled into the parking lot of the studio and saw that Brian and Nick were standing outside, as if waiting for them. As they got out, they received raised eyebrows. "Bone! Where have you been? Tima's waiting, Howie and Kev are already inside!" Nick said, eyeing Kayla. She looked at him and knew that AJ and Nick were gonna be talking later. Oh shit, she muttered. If there was one thing Kayla hated, it was being late. "Dont worry about it." AJ told her, as he put his arm around her shoulder. Inside, Kayla knew that it was worth it to be late this one time. They walked into the building together.
About 45 minutes later, Kayla groaned as she again missed her cue. What the hell is wrong with me, she thought, I know i can do this!! She looked over to where the Boys were goofing off. AJ was on top of Nicks shoulders and Brian was on Howies. She watched as Kevin was desperatly trying to get them to stop and pay attention. She must have watched them for too long, because, for the millionth time that day, Fatimas voice rang through the studio. "Kayla!!! You missed your cue again." Kayla looked at her apologetically. "Im sorry, i...." She didnt know what to say and was interrupted by a voice across the room.
"She was checking out my body!" She felt herself blush when she realized it was AJ who said that. Fatima looked at Kayla, then at AJ. "Well, Mr. body, do you think it would be to much trouble for you and your fellow bodies to come and practice today?" They walked over and for the thousandth time, attempted the routine. This time, it was going good. As the song ended, Kayla breathed a sigh of relief that she had made it through the whole song. Fatima told them that they were going to work on one of the slower songs and that she was going to pair each boy off with a dancer. To Kayla's surprise, AJ went up behind her and put his arms around her waist. Oblivious to the looks the boys and Fatima were giving him, he said with a smile, "Im already paired off!!"
Kayla was glad he was her partner. Aside from the fact that he was AJ, she had noticed that he was the best dancer in the group. The others were good, but she loved watching him move. As they danced, so close to each other, Kayla felt the confusing thoughts come rushing back to her. I cant be falling for him, she thought, but it feels so good in his arms. The rest of the day continued with all of them working very hard. It was coming together, but there was still alot of work to do. They had limited time to do it in though. In less than a month, they would be on the road.
Kayla was thinking about the tour as the day ended. Lost in thought, she gathered up her stuff and didnt hear AJ come up behind her. "Kayla, i was wondering...." Kayla jumped at his voice. "AJ!! You scared the shit outta me!!" She tried to sound mad, but instead laughed at herself. AJ continued,"Theres a barbecue at Nicks parents house tonight. Everybody is going to be there, do you want to come?" She pretended to think about it, then told him she would. She remembered something. "Can i bring my friend?" Chel had wanted to meet the boys, this would be the perfect chance. "Sure, no problem. Let me know where you live and I'll pick you both up there." She gave him her address and said, "8:00?" He looked at her and smiled, "Sounds great!!" He followed her outside and walked her to her car.
At her car, AJ stopped. "Today was crazy, wasnt it?" Not exactly sure what he meant, she answered him, "Yeah, it seems like we are never gonna be ready. The tour is so close." AJ nodded. "Are you nervous?" "A little. Ive never really been away from home." AJ smiled, then said, "Well then i am officially designating myself as your tour protector." Kayla laughed and teased him. "Oh i feel safe now!" AJ laughed too. "Well, you better!!" From inside, they heard"BONE!!!!! Tima wants to talk to us!! Stop flirting with the hired help and get in here!!" For a quick second, Kayla thought she saw AJ look embarrassed, but he quickly covered it up. "UGH!! Im gonna kill Nick!!" Kayla laughed. "So, I'll see you later, Kayla?" She loved hearing him say her name. "Of course. Bye bone!" She watched him as he walked back into the building. As she pulled out of the parking lot, all of her thoughts were on AJ. Oh great, she thought, Im falling in love.
