Sent as a messenger to Lord Elrond of Rivendell, Legolas attended the council that determined the fate of the One Ring. It is, for the most part, agreed that the Ring must be destroyed, and in the book, Elrond chooses a fellowship to do it. In the movie, after some tangling over what to do with the ring, Frodo steps up to say that he will take it to Mount Doom, where it was created, and cast it into the fires to destroy it, but he did not know the way, Gandalf said he will join him in carrying his "burden", shortly followed bu Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Sam, Merry and Pippin. Legolas was the Elf representation.
