Environmental Responsibility

There is so much that can be done to protect the environment, it is really just a matter of actually doing it. One could organize bottle or can rallies, work towards eliminating litter, or even just recycle their own trash. It does not have to be a huge community event, simple everyday habits can make all the difference. It is when people find their actions to minute to be worthwhile that the planet suffers. Though their actions may be small, when it is joined up with the rest of the population suddenly it has a lot more meaning.
The general idea is “Well, I'm only one person; my actions are not going to affect anything”. That statement could not be farther from the truth. Everyone's actions to play a role in the big picture, though it may be a small role, it is still there. It also does not help when an overwhelming majority of people come to this conclusion. So now there is a huge amount of people doing nothing for the cause because they feel it will not matter, but they are the reason we are in this position.
As for what can personally be done to protect the environment, there are various ways. They range from simple habits, all the way to complex group projects. To begin, start recycling plastic, glass, cans, and paper. All it requires is a few extra trash bins in ones house, and a second decision as to throw what where. This will not only produce a little extra money (through cashing in bottles and cans) but also be morally rewarding. Another environmentally friendly habit to make use of is turning the water off while brushing teeth. This really requires no effort, and those few moments of water all add up quick. Not only does this help the planet, but it also helps your water bill. Perhaps the last of the simple techniques is turning off lights when not using them. Turning off lights will use less energy (obviously) and that will in-turn require less oils and coals to be burned on a day to day basis. Not to mention, once again, the savings on the monthly energy bill.
If motivation and the patience are present, huge projects may be the way to go. Though it requires much effort and planning, the assembly will combine everyone's efforts into one huge pay off. It may seem out of reach, but it is most definitely within reach. One place to start may be with the simple habits already spoken about. Instead of keeping them on a personal level, have a rally where everyone can participate and combine their recycling. Have a can or bottle drive, and for an added moral reward donate the money to a school, daycare, etc. At the end of the day all participants could go home knowing they did the planet and community some good. This will likely trigger those people to take up the act of recycling themselves.
Even though the environment seems like a community effort, it is really personal. It requires every person to do their own small part, which will then bloom into a larger more fruitful effort. Everyone's own responsibility is nothing huge either, just turning off some lights or water. All it requires is for one to take the initiative, set an example, and do their part!
