Study in Europe & Singapore

For pursuing higher studies the options that Pakistanis usually think of are USA, Australia and England. This article is intended to shed some light on some more choices that are less expensive than the above mentioned places and are just as competitive or better than most of the universities in these countries. The following is some information about two such places; Germany and Singapore, both of these offer great oppurtunities for students and offer affordable programs that can translate into great careers. With the visa process for USA,Australia and England getting increasingly difficult, it is time that our prespective stduents consider these options.

Germany

There are various reasons for a student to choose German universities for higher studies and possible research.

  1. Engineering education in Germany is one of the best in the world and perhaps the best in Europe.
  2. There is absolutely no tuition fee.
  3. There are many opportunities to work part time and gain valuable experience in companies like Lucent Technologies, Siemens, DaimlerChrysler etc.
  4. Ample opportunities for research within the university.

German universities have started various international degree programs especially for non-German students which are taught completely in English although some knowledge of the German language would be very helpful in day to day living.
The living expenses in Germany are around DM 800 per month. This amount of money can be earned by working part time either at the university or in the industry. Any computer science graduate with some programming experience can get a job without much difficulty.

These international programs are not limited to computer science. There are many opportunities to study engineering, natural sciences etc. Detailed information about these programs can be accessed at www.daad.de or requested from [email protected]

As far as working full time is concerned, right now it is nearly impossible for a non EU national to get a work permit in Germany. But there is a bill currently in the German parliament, which will allow about 75,000 computer professionals, who are not EU nationals, to work in Germany.

The above information was kindly provided by Moiz Mehmood who is enrolled himself in one of these programs, he has also been kind enough to offer assistance and guidance to any Pakistani students interested in pursuing this option (however I would recommend doing your research and homework on the university and asking him only the things that you are unable to find on the web), his email id is: [email protected]

Singapore

National University of Singapore is a university with outstanding reputation and has collaboration programs with universities like MIT USA. It is amazingly inexpensive and a person graduating from there can have many benefits, for example he gets the Singapore workpermit by default (for more info on reasons to work in Singapore read the info on (www.geocities.com/computersciencejobs) which enables him to start really good in terms of the salary structure and growth opportunities. For more information on the university visit the website http://www.nus.edu.sg

Finland, Germany, Sweeden, and Denmark

The following site contains more information on the above-mentioned options:

Singapore Facts

These are some facts about Singapore (for those of you who have read this before this one contains some updating) which will answer questions that most of the people have asked me.

In case that there are further queries please feel free to contact me.

  1. The salary that a 2 year experience person can expect in Singapore is roughly 3k+, which means roughly 95,000+ rupees, this salary also means that living in nice conditions and after all taxations food, accommodation etc. you will be able to send at least 60,000+ home every month. You will also get the airfare from the employers and in some cases some days of free stay in Singapore. (these figures are for bachelors, for married the accommodation cost is higher and the food cost is lower, the wives are also allowed to work, if you are married and your wife is not working and you are getting a salary of 3k+ then you can expect to save around 30-45 thousand).
  2. National University of Singapore is an excellent place for further studies and offer extremely low-cost (lower than FAST) part time MS by research, course work etc.
  3. The total process from the time of interview to work permit issuance in Singapore takes between 3-6 weeks, things move at a very very fast pace and usually you should be mentally prepared to move in quickly.
  4. Singapore is an excellent spring board, that is after a 6-12 months experience you can get around 1.5-2 (4 to 5.5k) lakh here very easily or go to USA on a package much much better than you will get if you go from Pakistan (after 1 year of Singapore experience the offers that I got ranged from 58k to 75k my total experience to date is 1 years and 9 months). US companies come here very often and there are lots of ways to go to USA , Australia, New Zealand etc. The H-1 processing and stamping is also much faster and better.
  5. Its possible to apply for Singapore permanent resident ship after 6 months (and is almost always granted) and citizenship (passport) after two years, having Singapore passport you do not need visas for almost all the countries including USA.
  6. The place in general is extremely beautiful, modern and civilized. The crime rate is close to zero. Swimming pools, library, basketball etc. are available in every 'mohallah' on negligible cost (like 10 SGD an year).
  7. Its very easy to shift your wife and parents with you to Singapore on long term dependent visas.
  8. Pakistanis in general do not require any visa for social visit so your relatives can just catch a plane and come and meet you, all Pakistanis are issued 14,30 days visa on arrival at Singapore airport.
  9. Accommodation is the most expensive thing in Singapore, as its a very small country, the usual style of living is by renting room inside an apartment or by few people renting the whole apartment in either case the cost including all bills per head will be around 300 dollars (10,000 rupees)
  10. Food is quiet good and inexpensive and transport system is also very good and not so expensive (usually you will travel in MRT (trains) and buses and double dickers etc. The cost of food, transport, films etc. for the whole month will be 300-500 dollars (10,000-15000 rupees, depending on your lifestyle)
  11. The taxation is quiet low, somewhere in the range of 5% so that will be around 150 SGD (5000 rupees)
  12. So the total cost adds up to 25-35 thousand, with a salary of 95 to 110,000 you can easily send 55-70 thousand home.
  13. In my suggestion its extremely advisable to come to Singapore and go to USA from here rather than waiting in Pakistan and applying from there, for those who do not intend to go to USA, Singapore offers extremely good career and future prospects.
  14. Most probably your first job in Singapore will be through a contracting company (body shopper), after 6 months its very easy to find a permanent job in the client you are working for or otherwise. Most of the FAST etc. People in Singapore (including me) are currently working through the contract companies but have been offered permanent employments now.
