Interlude - Scotland

is booking a bus tour with a company called Haggis just asking for trouble?

First night in a hostel...

I have an on-again-off-again habit of keeping a journal (I refuse to call it a diary). I made sure it was in the "on-again" phase while traveling so that I'd have some reminders of where I'd gone, what I'd done, and what I had been thinking. My very first entry after leaving the safety of the castle and the coziness of my cousin's house was written in a washroom in a hostel in Edinburgh. Out of consideration for the other occupant of the room - he was already asleep when I back from my very expensive, but essential, session on the Internet.

Yes, that's right, he. In retrospect, it was rather foolish for me to reserve a bed in a mixed room while I was traveling on my own, but it was cheaper. And I didn't consider the fact that I might end up as the only female in the room. Luck of the draw, I suppose. On my second night, after the bus tour, I was the sole occupant of a room for eight. But this first night, I shared the room with three males. As I said, one was already asleep when I got in. The other two assumed I was sleeping when they got in after midnight, which meant I could listen to their reactions upon finding a girl in the room in relative safety and anonymity.

And their reactions, and comments, were odd, to say the least.

They started out expressing surprise, and interest, wondering if I was a "cutie." (I wonder about that myself ;) Then they wondered whether "it" was worth it - presumably, "it" being waking me up. But their conversation started to get incomprehensible to me after that: they decided "it" wasn't worth it because I might be under 19 and Protestant. If my age was a concern, then likely their thoughts involved more than merely waking me. But what my religion had to do with it, I can't figure out. I'm probably fortunate that they decided to just go to sleep, although I didn't feel at all threatened by their conversation, mostly just amused. I had to get an early start the next morning and all three of my roommates were still asleep when I left. So now two years later, I'm left wondering: wondering what they were talking about, wondering if they were disappointed to find me gone upon waking, and wondering if they were cuties themselves. :)
