10th May: Knowing that this was our last day with free boards, we stayed in the water until the bus left at 3. The waves came to our call and the swell was perfect. The rip was strong in places and if you didn't keep your spot you were swept down the beach on an accelerating conveyor belt... relaxing if you didn't know that there was a reefy head at the end of the beach. I caught mostly wash as usual and had a good time on the big 8'6" and 9' boards. The back beaches around the point that faced the Pacific's swell head on weren't even considered in these conditions. Some braved the cliff jumping into an old quarry on the way to Byron on sunset, but yours truely didn't relish the idea of wet butts on busses.. the quarry was naturally charges with warmish groundwater, making an idyllic last stop before the Byron brightlights.. Our first taste of Byron was checking in and we quickly learnt to adapt to the pace.. After spending some quality time in the embrace of the backpackers amenities we forced our pampered limbs to carry us to the Beach Hotel where we found a table to collapse at and wait for the local band to wear themselves out.. Things started to get a little hazy at this time, but I do remember dancing to the small hours in a little place called Cocamurras or some such. Must have been the coffee...
