11th May: Waking to an eyeful of one of the Dutch girls sharing our room in a silk nightgown, I quickly warmed to Byron. After a lazy breakfast, the crew from the Surfari were loath to split up, but eventually we wandered out to check out the ordinary surf and to walk to the lighthouse on the easternmost point of mainland Australia - gets a Flavel ***** recommendation. Saw water monitors, kangaroos, sea eagles as well as a pod of 8 or so dolphins surfing the waves, jumping from the foamy crests still waving their tails in the air. I can understand why the spot is so prized by hangliders. Wandering back to Byron for some craved fish and chips, we naturally ended up in the bar where we were joined by Roy and Claire who had thoughtfully driven down from the Gold Coast to meet us... Claire was disappointed by the weather down south, but quickly cheered when she saw the entrants to the triathelon which happened to be taking place (sponsored by our own Coopers! If only they didn't charge up to $62 a case here!). After loading Mikes surfboard into the tailor-made Jeep we landed at Elaine's house in New Farm, Brissy, to much hugging and tears as the elusive Sarah had been gavanting for far too long o/s. After squeezing the breath from each other, we headed down to the traditionally colourful Tibetan Cafe in Brunswick St for some top class Himalayan nosh. We composed an eating team of Hamish, Mike, myself, Elaine, Sarah, Roy, Claire, George and Nadia, but were distracted from the enjoyable task of stuffing our faces by the pandemonium erupting in the Brazilian restaurant across the street. Who would have thought we'd have a stage show and an intro for Sth America so soon? Great conversation, good red, what more can be said.
