Buzios
5th Jun (Wed): Waking inexplicably early, I draw and read in one of the many ever present hammocks, enjoying the morning sun... mmm too easy. I am surprised by the size of the fare for breakfast (fruit bowl, rolls, bread, ham, cheese, jam, coffee etc) and that the fruit juice has a strange froth on it. It“s not until now that I click that all juices in Brazil are freshly squeezed.. guava, passionfruit, orange, pineapple and others I can“t name in english all make their way through the blender. Feeling somewhat full, I make the most of my morning contemplations and forget that toilet paper can“t be flushed in this country, blocking the toilet. I could have got away with it...except that I was the only guest. Swayed by the lure of free Caipirinhas I decided to take one of the local boat cruises for the day, visiting Armacćo, Ossos, Joćo Fernandes and Tartarusa beaches and cruising past Fela and Rasa islands. The ship was similar to those used by the early Portuguese navigators except for two things.. there were only 12 passengers and the sails had long since been removed. Stopping at one of the more touristy beaches choccas with bars and their tabled areas on the beach, we are pestered with offers of unshucked oysters (frozen), shrimps and lobster before we even get off the boat. Three of the aussies on the boat ate 3 maron sized lobsters while I contented myself with a henna tatoo after some lazy haggling. Isolated beaches with rare purple and read coloured sands are easily accesible if you leave these areas behind however. The locals build fish trap rock walls to harvest fish at low tide. Netting is a passion. Brasilians do not all consider a deserted beach to be perfect.. many prefer a plethora of people. Getting back to Buzios by 3, I decide to take my paints to last night“s beach, but am stopped by one of the crew from the boat cruise before I get there and enjoy a beer at his mate“s bar on the beach, communicating in dodgy Portuguese and guestures. Seeing the sky taking on more colour, I excuse myself and continue to the beach, painting while the sun set and trying to ignore the swimsuit model being photographed 100m away. I dine at the restaurant recommended to me by Cidata (Sidharta) and enjoy yet another free Caipirinha while watching the Buzian culture. I wander down Stone Street and watch a game of chess.. before long I am invited to a game (or 2) and I begin to regret the days excesses. (
