Buzios to Macaé
6th Jun (Thurs): After yet another sumptous breakfast, I catch one of the many privately run vans ferrying people to Geriba beach, on the Atlantic side of the small Buzios peninsula. Noting the less than enerjetic surf, I hire a 9´6" longboard and spend three enjoyable hours catching every wave that came my way on the long beach break. No rip! Girls and guys alike were surfing, but I was the only one with a rashy, thus had the most staying power.. Buzios has a small "cold" current bringing in cooler water. Heading back to Buzios, I catch the bus to Macaé where Paul and Maureen McDougall had generously offered to let me stay and enjoy a barbeque with their friends John and Laura. Paul was a mate of Westy´s when they were at uni, sharing many a pint of Coopers at the Austral, until Paul chased the big dollars offshore with Schlumberger (petroleum industry company), working and backpacking around Australia and the world, coming to ´rest´ in Brasil. After getting a firsthand experience of the national Brasilian bus system and apologising to Maureen for being an hour late, we drove to their house on the Atlantic ocean beachfront, complete with small island 100m off the coast directly out from their house, creating good surf on most days. After a soothing ale and greeting the two beautiful street dogs that they had adopted, Paul and Maureen set about remembering how to cook at home, blaming the thieves (who burgled their house for a 2nd time the previous week) for all the misplaced cooking paraphernalia. An interesting civilised dinner followed, discussing Laura´s Texan pronounciation of panties and nasty, gun control and talking with your hands. (
