30th May (Fri): Waking with the firm resolution of jogging to the other (Atlantic facing) side of the island for a day of surfing, my fervor was slightly dampened by my watch telling me it was already 11. Not easily put off, I donned my carefully packed sneakers, backpack and set about startling other walkers by running through the rainforest - beautiful. After getting agreeably lost for an hour or so, I finally made it to the surf beach of Lapes Mendes at about 3 o'clock to discover that the fabled Hire Boards were not present.. at least the waves were small with a big onshore wind. After a dip I was making my way back to the sheltered beaches when I met a guy from Sao Paula called Marcel - we conversed brokenly in english and portuguese - after about 5 minutes he offered to share his tent with me (no he wasn't gay) and after another 5 minutes he mentioned that he had some friends on Lopes Mendes who had a boat that would be returning to Abrao that night and that I could get a lift. Getting over my parental training I accepted and we headed back to Lopes Mendes where I practiced more dodgy portuguese.. however, Marcels friends didn't appear. After making it clear that I didn't want to spend the night on the beach, I headed back with the others to the boat, as it was about this time that my knees were beginning to tell me that running up and down steep hills all day requires training. Once on the boat (without Marcel), another group of Sao Paulo people arrived with big eyes and after saying g'day they let me listen to their wicked dance music (Roy - maybe I should have bought a minidisc player) and talk crap. After the sunset-lit trip back to Abrao my cold was letting me know that it too required attention, so somehow I managed only to drink kiwi juices and water for the first night in weeks. Abrao is made for families to feel safe - beautiful cobblestone alleys are lined with colourful shops and fine restaurants in abundance.
