Isle Grande
1st Jun (Sat): After a great sleep I discovered that Marcos had been shopping for breakfast, so I ate with Filipe and Alesandro and others, surfers from Rio. It's interesting to note that Hello in Portuguese is Oi.. and nothing else. If you want to get someone's attention, you shout Oi. This seems to be insufficient, as a curious windy whistle is used, primarily by men, to attract the attention of people and dogs alike. If a whistle isn't heard by the target, the whistler normally continues for about 10 seconds before shouting Oi. Takes a while to get used to whistling and shouting.. After ensuring that surfboards are available on Lopes Mendes with a non South America Experience travel guide, I walked rather than ran through the rainforest, running into those whacky canadians Eric and Marcel in the middle of nowhere, as well as acquantances from the previous nights - although the Island is Grand, the people certainly stick together.. I was starting to feel claustrophobic!! Halfway through the walk I ran into the Marcel from Sao Paulo with some new friends and we went for a quick walk before returning to the beach in a more relaxed frame of mind. I stayed on the beach and chatted with Fermanda, a girl from Sao Paulo doing environmental studies at university before heading to Lopes Mendes where, as suspected, no surfboards were in evidence. I did, however run into Filipe and Alesandro from breakfast and it turns out that Alesandro is a surf instructor in Rio - and I was just wondering how I would go about finding a surf school... After another sunset boat ride back to Abrao, I ran into the 2 Canadians again and we went for beers. One of the Sao Paulo group from yesterday's boat trip was an expert in Poi (fire twirling) and he treated me to an impromptu display in the street.. it was a relief to see the police patrol keep walking past.. Being a Saturday night, the main street was chockas, bands were playing and people were dancing. Because it was an island no-one felt threatened and the ambience was natural, locals inviting tourists to soccor games.
