10-14th Jun (Mon-Fri): From now on, only weekly highlights will be written until I travl again.. I moved hostels to the Cocacabana Chalet while looking for a long term place. I have decided on either Ipanema or Barra, a region south which is reminicent of the Gold Coast - except for the slums. You can see a 1st world shopping center (reached only by car) right next to a canal where fishermen are casting their nets amongst the junk and the roads arenīt paved. I get a surf lesson for free on Tuesday - its a cheap way of hiring a board! Itīs interesting to note that the unevenness of the cobblestones on the footpath is often caused by busses driving on them to get around traffic. Traffic jams are frequent, and the tunnels arenīt well ventilated, making you cough up goo in the mornings... it wasnīt a cold afterall! The Portuguese lessons are continuing every day - I have a great teacher but I will have to find another school if I move into the place Iīm interested in in Barra. I canīt believe that I may finally have found a place!! Check out the link to Pousada Barra do Sol. Hearing from a couple of locals that another battle had broken out between the drug lords of the shanty towns was reinforced by the sounds of guns as well as fireworks from the hills surrounding Cocacabana. Heading out with Maurico, the manager of the Copacabana Praia Hostel, to a party, the taxi almost t-barred a Combi van trying to escape the area where the party was. A crowd of paniced people were desperately trying to flag down the taxi and apparently police were everywhere.. we didnīt stop, and, needless to say, found another place to party. Traffic, interesting as it is, becomes even more intriguing when night falls as for some reason headlights are left on parker setting... are they trying to save fuel? Or make more of an impact when they flash their lights (which has about 50 different meanings). Whatever, it's another thing to watch out for. Me and Donan, an English guy, went to the Brazilian Modern Art Museum - way impressive. What a history with all the slave history / settlement patterns / persecution of the native indians. Dad would have been impressed with the 1890s Berlin Reistendorf car and the old armaments; Merle with the elaborate vases and decor used by the Portuguese settlers.
