13th - 15th July (Sat-Mon): Although the weather wasnīt brilliant, I wandered into Ipanema to find my next accomodation (month in Barra da Tijuca is up). Lucky that another gringo I met at the surf school (and introduced to the Pousada) gave me the name of a good place - Harmonia - because the two places that I thought existed didnīt.. I wandered into the impossible to find, unsignposted hostel and was surprised to see Matt working there - last time I saw this atypical american he was staying in an appartment in Copacabana Praia and visiting Bahia in the north of Brasil. Good place, check out the link opposite. Leaving the hostel for the "hippy fair" I ran across an art/culture centre the equivalent of the Mercury in Adelaide and was also sidetracked by continuous fireworks I had thought over since the world cup... a big parade for the saints. A helicopter was buzzing the parade filling the air with jet gas as well as incense from the waving incense burner... then they dropped about a ton of rose and flower petals from the sky... an interesting experience to say the least. Women walk alone at night here dressed to a T and donīt get hassled, only admired. The country is certainly sexually liberated - the guys know that they can get sex at home. This takes away a major area of trauma in Australia - rape. However, a married Brasilian man who is not with his wife acts like a single man, and this applies to many women as well. The divorce rate is high and I can just imagine what the marriages are like... Al - lots of game playing here, starting with lying to the parents about where you are.
