15th - 18th July (Mon-Thurs): Through the mediocre weather, the brilliance of the Hotel Harmonia shines through - great to be in Ipanema, such a vibrant suberb - people after the metal and glass automobiles of Barra. Couple of statistics in the paper: Homocides down 17% - from 630 to 570 in Rio for the months of May and June respectively. Most of these in the favelas which account for between 1 and 2 million of Rio´s 11 million inhabitants. Ian would say that 86.4% of statistics are made up on the spot however. Some saleschildren and men use an interesting technique to sell - you´re looking out the window on the bus when someone taps you on the shoulder: you turn around and something is thrust into your hand. The same things happen while sitting at kiosk tables - something is thrust into your hand. Taking the object is a hard habit to break - watching a child today & I start to understand the depth of environmental conditioning.. Tom the Canadian has returned from Bahia.
