28th May (Tue): Appartment day. Finally getting Maurice (the brother of the hostel owner Mario) when he wasn´t hungover, we checked through the papers looking for suitable lodgings in Cocacabana. I´m glad he was on that phone not me. All I had to do was wander around looking at places... one of which was a killer: four people (2 bunks & 2 singles) sleeping in one 3mx4m room... hmm seems even Maurice couldn´t decipher that one. If nothing else its a good way of seeing how most people live here. Accomodation ranges from $600 to $200 per month for a fully furnished room. My second Portuguese lesson was an adventure shared with a new teacher... a little tough to get used to another´s methods.. there was no practicing with the locals on the bus afterwards this day. While walking back from the bus stop, I decided to move some detritus from the middle of the road as a good samaritan gesture - to discover that if I moved the detritus, I´d not be doing the world a favour.. the rubbish was covering a huge hole in the ground. Not just a pothole, a hole flanked by crumbling bitumen with no visible bottom... If I buy a bike, I´m sticking to the bike paths! After a day of watching callouses grow on my feet it was a relief to go to Shenannigans Irish/american bar in Ipamena with Tom, Matt and Mick (2 guys who´ve been staying in the hostel for a couple of months) to get a taste of the 1st world (books on the walls, wood everywhere etc.) before heading down to a kiosk at Ipamena to sip fruit drinks and beers while watching some volleyballers play under lights. Did I mention the $1.50 beers?
