29th May (Wed): After looking at another appartment, I decided to book a 10 day trip around Rio state, maybe even to Macae to visit Westy´s mates before moving into permanent accomodation. The trip is a hop-on hop-off trip going to Isle Grande (island resort), Paraty (colonial town), Petropolis (in the hills, where the Portuguese royals once held court), Buzios (beach town) and Niteroi (Old Rio, across the Bay). I think I have given up on KaKa and his invisible flat (and non-existant english) even though he is, like many confused men, a nice guy. Riding in busses through the numerous tunnels of Rio reminds me strongly of working underground at Olympic Dam or Woodcutters: The noise of a diesel engine going flat out; the dodgy flourescent lighting; the smell of badly ventilated diesel. After a great lesson with my `primary school´teacher Maria at the Feedback Portuguese school, I bussed it back to the Cocacabana Hostel to find that my erstwhile spanish speaking mate with the shoulder dreads had managed to pick up yet more girls and was going to a rave... 35 km out of town. Keener than a Wiltshire most of the time, my ardour cooled when 11:30 passed so I headed out with Mick (from last night) to another bar.. which turned out to be the whiskey bar my poor head so well remembers. I still can´t recall the name of the place... but I´ll start running when I see that door again.
