Rio de Janeiro
26th May (Sun): Almost as important as church is the beach to the Carioca. Sunday is beach day so grabbing my copy of the paper and a dictonary I headed down to Ipamena and Arpoedor, named after the whale harpooners who used to harpoon basking whales from the rocky promontary. These rocks now make for one of the best surfing spots in the region and Iīm keen to check out the waves soon.. as soon as I find an appartement. While enjoying Cococabana and Ipanemena beaches, you constantly hear the cries of callous throated vendors plying everything from beer to beads to sunburn cream. Kind of good unless you want some peace. Somehow I resisted the pull of the favela (slum) party that night, even with promises of girls `sweeping the floor with their bumsī which sounded pretty interesting. Apparently there is nothing like this type of party which happens every sun after the soccor in the roughest area of Rio.
