Rio de Janeiro
25th May (Sat): Waking to a runny nose and a sore head at about 1 pm I headed out for some Acai and some beach resuscitation.. a wonderful remedy. I did manage to chase a few apartments though before another sleep. After a little consideration, I decided go out with the backpacker crew whose typical formula is to drink in the Hostel until about 11, wonder what clubs to go to, discover that its cheaper before a certain time and faff around too much to make that time thus pay full price. This night was no exception. Piling into 5 taxis we headed to a club called Escala in Leblon, the poshest neighbourhood in Rio. The club must have had over 1000 people dancing to Drum and Bass, but there was still just enough room to make a circle and for some of the less inhibited to demonstrate some dodgy breakdancing skills to the amusement of the locals. Luckily I remembered how to direct the taxi driver back to the Hostel at 5. Some compatriots were not so fortunate, being dropped off in the worst area of Cococabana - the worst area south of the centre I think, and getting mugged (no weapons mum.) Kind of funny, but this story doesñ´t get as much airplay in the hostel as the one about the drunk English guy who was lost, asking directions from prosititutes who promptly stuck their hands into his pockets and relieved him of his extra cash. As long as you´re alert, Rio seems fine. Drug related shootings are regularly seen outside some clubs though.. apparently the 5th friday in a row...
