Rio de Janeiro
24th May : Waking to a runny nose and a sore head at about 1 pm I headed out for some Acai and some beach resuscitation.. a wonderful remedy. I did manage to chase a few apartments and to get to another, private language school where I arranged to get private Portuguese tuition, starting Monday - finally. It still takes a while to get used to riding on those busses without a seatbelt. Being a Friday I went out with the owner of the Hostel Mario, his brother Maurice and Simon, an ozzie working with the South American Experience here in Rio to a whiskey bar in the center of town. Some people say that whiskey is good for getting over colds right? Itīs great to see a crowd so visibly enjoy dancing to the cover band on stage. Most Brasilian clubs use a card system for drinks: barmen mark the card with what you have had and you pay the cashier at the end of the night.. apparently this is to prevent the barmen ripping you off (!), but donīt lose your card or its $180. And if you lose your card and your money, I donīt want to know what those big guys at the door will do to you.
