Brisbane - Stradbroke Island
16th May: I awoke to find that first Elaine and then Michael had left the tent in search of a few soyachinos and Michael's news fix. The last couple of weeks have been the longest Mike has been without news for years, and he had some catching up to do. I arrived to find the equivalent of a homeless persons house spread over the Stonefish cafe's bar - papers from every state it seemed. We then walked around the headland to Main beach, watching a couple of avid fishermen catch bream from the rocks amongst turtles, sea eagles and, you guessed it, dolphins. The surf was relatively small for the Island, so we counted 20 surfers on the prime break of Main beach, the beach facing the Pacific full on. On heading back to the camp I managed to grab Mike's board when he wasn't looking and head out to the Cylinder point break. Conditions were a little choppy and you had to be really careful about being court in rips.. either side of the 40m wide "perfect break" zone existed rips which quic kly took you either out to sea on the left or around the point to the next beach on the right.. at a rate only just slower than I could paddle. I took 8 good waves, and registered that one I had caught was the green face, taking the unbroken wave by standing up on the board before the crest spits foam and curls and riding away from the spume as it tunnelled. I am well impressed with Mike's 7'6" board after riding it, especially since it's only 2 3/8" thick - I'd thought I'd need something 8'6" or more and more than 3" thick for a wave to carry my fat ass but I was proved wrong in those conditions.. so manouverable! Reluctantly I yielded the board to Michael (when the waves had died :-P ) and headed for yet another luxurious hot shower before loading up the car and heading to Main Beach, where Mike joined the pack of locals in the surf - these guys were good - 360 degree turns, jumps, you name it. I managed to get some degree of control over my new watercolours by attempting to capture the beauty of Main Beach while Elaine got some more serious nature time... then back on the ferry to Brisbane and civilisation - Elaine made fresh vege stirfry (delectable), cold Boags and European championship soccor final..
