Brisbane - Stradbroke Island
15th May: Crawling out into yet another sunshiney morning, Elaine and I decided to attempt to hire a canoe while Mike played with the sharks. Heading down to Dunwich, we found the sports store and were full of cheer until we asked for the canoe. It was like the store keeper had been force-fed a lemon... "oh, its $90 for the day and it'll be $500 deposit.. you can't just carry it, you need roof-racks.. my partners not here today.. and how about my crook leg?". After avoiding all conversation regarding her leg or her business partner and petting her chiawowa until it purred, we were rewarded with a capitulative "it would have to be while i'm in the store", and the sun started shining again: $50 for the 1/2 day, a $200 deposit, backrests, trolley for the canoe etc.. After some energetic paddling, Elaine & I headed out to Goat Island, passing a dynamic island populated with moving beaches and houses, cormorants, stingrays and the inevitable dolphins. Goat proved to be aptly named e xcept for a half submerged coal powered shipwreck so we drifted through some mangroves and headed back to Straddie. The afternoon was spent trying to figure out how anyone can enjoy boogeyboarding (although Elaine seemed to get the knack of them) and enjoying another sub-tropical sunset over the point. Michael had decided that he was giving up drinking, which we all applauded so we headed up for the mandatory countery at the pub. Mike somehow resisted drinking until the VB stopped coming then joined us for a few ports and cards at the alfresco dining tables.. After closing the pub, I discovered that I could easily adapt to sleeping in hammocks.. mmmm.
