Brisbane - Stradbroke Island
14th May: We spent the day chasing down a surfboard for me, but it seems that although the weather was about 28 degrees, the water 22 degrees and the nights clear as crystal, no one was on the Island thus all the blokes who "run" shops head off to the mainland for a few days off... sorry. Was also ashamed to find that the surf shop no longer hires out boards because of the prohibitive cost of the insurance premiums.. when you read about the guy in the gold coast who sued the local council after diving into a sandbar in the surf (between flags) and branding it "unsafe" you understand why. About 11 we headed down to pick up Elaine from the Ferry after she had a girly Secret Life of Us and Frangelico night with Sarah who was coming off her first day of real work in years.. In a desperate attempt to burn off the excess fish and chips, I hired a mountain bike for the day and went looking for mountains... on an island of sand. I foolishly thought that the mine shown on the map was a rock mine... not a sand one... so much time was spent doing sand slides on ye olde singlespeed chain braking pushbike.. The highlight was cruising down the long beach from Amity Point to the Lookout with the crashing waves just lapping at the tyres of the rental bike as the sun went down - magic light. Another monster meal at the Straddie Hotel followed, with many a pint/schooner of dodgy VB being had. After the barman scratched up some Penfolds Port from somewhere, we settled into a boisterous night of hijinks. (150m to the water)
