News Item: The story of Glenn Foster's B-17 crew is found in the Feb. Issue of "Flight Journal"

Schweinfurt Raid

Shot Down Over Germany
A B-17 crew's one-way mission to Schweinfurt
Jan Tegler

In this article, Jan Tegler tells the compelling story of 22-year-old B-17 pilot Robert Slane's (he was Glenn Foster's pilot, Dad, or Glenn, was the navigator) final flight over Germany. Slane estimated he saw over 300 enemy aircraft during that mission in October, 1943. Following damage from Fw 190 fighters and flack, with two engines inoperative, Slane kept the bomber aloft long enough for his crew to bail out. Again under attack by a Ju 88, he then crash-landed in a handy field and was promptly captured.
