November 2: BIG horses!

And, baseball, whiffle baseball, whiffle softball, small rubber ball, rubber home plate, 1/4" extension, small pulley, bands.

For me, 7 books, 2 plays, 1 movie, and 40 miles.

After church yesterday we picked up the key for the polling place and all the voting equipment. Then we came home and moved the stuff into the house and then we went to Fairfield.

The main reason we were going was to see the Clydesdales, but while we were there we went to the Olive Oil tasting place, where we bought some lime oil and white balsamic vinegar, and to the Thompson chocolate factory (making bunnies now) where I got chocolate turkeys to take to Roni's mother-in-law at Thanksgiving, and, of course, to Jelly Belly where we had lunch. The hamburgers, pizzas, and hot dogs are jelly-belly shaped. However, I had an adult meal, a Reuben sandwich, so it was normal. They actually have good food there.

Then it was time to go over and admire the horses. They are just SO beautiful! They were hitched up and Gus the dalmation was riding high on the beer wagon. He looked supremely bored, when he wasn't asleep. Two horses, Duffy and Ted, were resting. Duffy seems to have a wound on the hind leg. The other horses were Steve, Turbo, Flash, Sonny, Stewart, Major, Roman, and Thunder.

But the thrill of watching the horses pull the wagon around, while wonderful, is limited, so then we went up to the gift shop. They have a much improved security system. We didn't go on the tour, so we didn't get to guzzle any beer. I think they have fewer gifts than previously, which I suppose we can blame on the down economy.

From there, I wanted to check out the Grizzley Island Natural Reserve. However, along the way we discovered Rush Ranch. We walked on the marsh trail (poor Rich). We saw lots of pheasants, and what I thought were blue butterflies. However, they were bigger than these, so they may just be blue-tinted cabbage whites. Anyway, it was a nice walk and a nice view of the Suisun Marsh and an "ecotone", a boundary between different ecosystems. We could even see the Ghost Fleet out in the Bay. At one point we saw a sign: "All campfires prohibited. Peat ground will burn." It's incipient coal! In fact, it's pre-incipient diamonds!

New York City was chosen for the US bid for the 2012 Olympics. Thank goodness! I didn't want to even think about the traffic, the mess, the whole shebang, had it been in San Francisco. (Not to mention terror, because I have hopes that this particular war will be over by then, but right now one has to think about it.) I saw people in SF totally devastated, in tears. Excuse me? There IS a war on. I don't see this as the big tragedy of the decade.

Today we were on our way to the Jesuit-Sheldon football game, and looked over at a light to see a red Protege5. We were, as Rich said, "beside ourselves" so he rolled down his window and we agreed that the cars were great.

The first couple of plays in the game, we kicked off, they lost yardage and punted, we got it, and fumbled. Finally Rich said "Why don't we just give the ball to Sheldon till we get them to the goal line?" After awhile our players remembered how to hold onto the ball and we left at 43-13. The school has new fiberglass bleachers and a new Marauder costume. A kid was wearing a t-shirt that said "hustle, sweat, desire, heart... makes a Marauder." Then there was the Japanese student with "Our league arise Our unionize." It's been awhile since Makoto stayed with us and I had all the shirt mottos written down. I feel Coke.
