The Otago Rock and Mineral Club meets on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30 pm. These meetings are held in the clubrooms at 53 Melvern Street, Woodhaugh, Dunedin.
There is a relevant speaker at each meeting or sometimes we have auctions. Because there is close contact with the Geology Department of the University of Otago, we often get talented people from the Geology Department to lecture, as well as visiting Rock Hounds and others.
A hot drink is available after the meeting.
There are competitions every month for worked, unworked and junior. A cup is presented at the Christmas function to each winner.
Newcomers are welcome to visit at two meetings before being required to join.
There is a spotlight table at each meeting where members can get their specimens identified. There is also a showcase where a member displays specimens from their own collection and they also give a small talk about where they have found the specimens, etc.
There is information at the meeting about where the next field trip is being held and what equipment is needed, eg protective goggles, sledgehammers, etc.
There is also an excellent library of books and magazines that may be borrowed by members.
There is a photograph competition once a year, with several categories. This is judged at the Christmas competition, with a prize for each of the winners.
