RACE COURSES

The Port Townsend Course

At the fairgrounds is the Dismal Bog and teddybear tossThe course goes out to the light on the point
Before the final push to the finish, a buffet is served in the park-n-ride lotThe race begins with two laps around downtown
The official Kinetic Chicken
This compact, half-day, eight-mile race is easily accessible for spectators. The shortness of both the course and the list of official rules make it popular for racers who first decide to build their machines the night before!

Saturday
Events begin at noon with a parade of racers through downtown to the Monroe Street hill, where the brake test is held. Those passing proceed to the marina launch basin where the sculptures are float tested (often for the first time).
Saturday night is the Rose Hip Kueen Koronation Kostume Ball and Kueen Kontest at the downtown American Legion Hall. Not to be missed!!

Sunday
On Sunday mid-morning, racers line up their machines at City Hall. The race begins at noon with two laps around the downtown area, then into the bay for a quarter mile water segment along the waterfront.
Coming ashore, the racers climb uphill through town and out to the lighthouse at Fort Worden State Park.
Next stop is the Jefferson County Fair Grounds for time trials, and the dreaded, thigh-deep mud of the Dismal Bog.
Surviving crews point their machines back toward town for several miles to a box lunch "refueling" at the park-n-ride lot south of downtown. Tanned and rested, the racers push for the finish line.
An awards ceremony follows.

Arcata-Ferndale World Championship

Kinetic sculpture racing always turns heads
This three-day race is a grueling, 38-mile endurance contest.

Day One
Beginning early Saturday morning, sculptures arrive on the Arcata Plaza. The race starts promptly at Noon and the sculptures head west and enter the sand dunes.
They proceed south on the hard-packed sand near the waterline for several miles. They then turn inland to fearful Dead Man's Drop, and then cross Samoa Bridge into Eureka.
The racers stop at the Old Town checkpoint then proceed to the Day One Finish at the Bayshore Mall in south Eureka.

Day Two
On Sunday morning the racers depart Bayshore Mall and proceed to Fields Landing where the racers prepare for the two-mile bay crossing to South Jetty. Once safely ashore, they run south along the coast, up over Table Bluff and on to the wind (and often rain) swept Crab Park campground to spend the night.

Day Three
Monday morning early the racers depart Crab Park and proceed to Cock Robin Island where they make their second water crossing at the Eel River. Once across the Eel, the racers tackle the challenging Slippery Slimy Slope and then push the last few miles into Ferndale for the finish.
