Club History
Each
Christmas, we adopt 10 families and supply them with all the food
for the Christmas dinner and gifts for each member in the family.
Our
club sponsors the Good Friday Prayer Breakfast, where we subsidize
the cost of the meal and organize a speaker and music to start the
day. Many denominations are represented and the 250 tickets are
sold out well in advance.
In
1957 the club took over the ownership and operation of Sunny Cove
Camp on the shores of Rainy Lake. Originally the camp was only
accessed by water but it has been expanded and developed and now
has a paved road entering the site. The camp is on 29 acres of
land, 2 beautiful beaches, 6 sleeping cabins, 1 handicapped cabin,
showers, caretakers cabin and 2 dining halls. We are presently
installing a water purification system. The camp may be rented by
groups, usually church youth groups, for a week at a time and is
usually booked well in advance. Kiwanis donates the camp to Day
Care and the Home for the Aged, Others pay a nominal fee only as
the camp is heavily subsidized by our club Selected youth from the
D A R E Program are taken fishing by local law enforcement
officers, then return to the camp for the awarding of prizes and a
supper supplied and cooked by Kiwanis. We do a lot of cooking, the
Relay For Life Breakfast at 5.30 AM, Parents Night at Day Care are
a couple of examples, but our big show is the Steak Fry at the
Canadian Bass Fishing Championships where we supply a complete
meal including a New York Strip to over 700 people.
