Why it was Built
The construction of
Fort Denison began in 1840 when the new Commanding Royal Engineer George
Barney suggested that Pinchgut Island become part of the harbours
defensive fortifications.
This defence
capability was now quite obviously needed after several American
man-of-wars arrived unexpectedly off Sydney Cove. The fort was also
needed to defend Sydney against a possible attack by Russian warships,
which never took place.
