Overseeding aftercare:
There are 2 important procedures in overseeding. We perform one and you must perform the other. We create a seed bed for good seed to soil contact which include aerating to reduce compaction and loosen the soil, slicing the soil to ensure good seed to soil contact, using a quality seed, and applying a starter fertilizer to help the seed to germinate. You as the customer must share in the overseeding process by performing aftercare, which is keeping the seed moist. This is not a difficult task but a very important one to ensure the survival of the new grass seedlings.
1-10 days following overseeding - light frequent waterings 1-2 times per day to keep the top of the soil moist. The more heat & sun, the more often light waterings are needed. The best way to judge how often to water is to do ?the finger test?. Simply feel the soil with your finger to see if it is moist. If not, water more ? if it is moist than you can wait until later that day or the next day to water.
10-20 days following overseeding - Water deeply into the soil. Gradually increase the length of watering time and gradually decrease the frequency of watering. The new grass plants need to be watered in deeply as they develop their root system. Please do not stop watering as soon as you see new grass plants. They are not fully developed yet and can not withstand drought stress.
The most common reason for overseeding failure is lack of water. (To much water will kill the seed also. If it is to muddy to walk on your lawn than stop watering for a short period of time.) Follow the steps above and you will have new grass in about 2-3 weeks.
