Street Magic:
Power of Persuasion
Hannah:

Im starting to see spots. Staring at the screen too long will do that. The rest of the library comes into focus as I look up from the monitor and stretch. Only now do I realize from the dull ache in my lower back just how long Ive been hunched over in the same position. 4 hours. Its time for a break. Some food and maybe a nice long walk. I need some exercise to clear my head from this paper. I hit save several more times on my work before closing my telescreen and gathering the rest of my things.

Hey Hannah! Do you have a minute? I hear, followed by the Shhh!! of other people as focused on their work as I was on mine. I look up to see Maxis redden behind his goggles. Sorry he whispers back.

I nod and motion for him to follow me outside.

I was ready for a break anyway I tell him as my eyes adjust to real daylight. This paper on the hydrophysics of the merworld is driving me crazy.

I know what you mean. Im finally starting to get my paper for Mr. Binders class together. In fact, I really have to thank you for your idea about unconsciousness playing a role.

Glad I could help. So anyway, whats up? Weve started walking across the commons towards the park.

Well, actually, I wanted to know what you think of Blitz? The question catches me off guard and I stop mid-stride.

What do you mean? I ask, trying to buy time and phrase my response.

I mean do you like him? Damn, Maxis really doesnt beat around the bush.

Hes a cool guy. I say shrugging, refusing to admit to anything more. Maxis looks disappointed.

So whats the problem then?

Hes staring intently at me, curious, really wanting to know the answer. I know hes not gonna go away until I tell him the whole story so why prolong it.

Im really not into being the flavor of the week.

As cool as he is, thats the decision I came to late Sunday night when I finally got home and realized why I had a set of Snake Snacks in my stomach that matched Lyssras.

I really dont think you would be.

I cant help but laugh.

Look, I know Im new here but that type of word does travel fast, just as fast as a 4.6 GPA.

I know all about word traveling fast, but I also know the guy behind the rumors.

Ive been hoping for something like this. Some piece of information that would negate what I already know and give me a reason to let my guard down. But now that its here I still cant believe it.

Look all Im saying is just talk to him. Get to know him yourself. Then see if Im right. Please?

Its an offer I cant refuse, especially not when its paired with that polite boyish charm. I smile at Maxis Sure why not.

He grins trust me, you wont regret it!

But as he walks away my skepticism still remains. And its being joined by another bag of Snake Snacks...
