They say everyone here's got a dream. As far as I've seen, they're not wrong. This city is drunk on dreams. The people on the bottom dream of a room above the clouds where sunshine and sky is something more than a street mage's illusion. The people on the top dream too, of edgeside property, or owning an aircar, or maybe waking up with the talent.
My landlord wants to make it big betting on fights. He remembers the big steal he would have made when he was only a boy and nobody thought Airhold Armstrong would be a contender. The girl who hands me my coffee each morning wants to be famous in the Dreamscape. She spends every credit she earns on holodiscs and her pitiful excuse for an agent. I told her for the amount of cash she was paying him to hire me and I'd find her something. Of course, she said to stuff it.
Yeah, everyone here's got dreams and big ones. This place breeds them like rats or disease. I've got one too. My dream is to get out.
I'm almost there. A few more wide eyed tourists and I'll be able to afford an industrial grade aircar. I've got a friend building it custom. And there is a place in the country calling my name. You think I'm kidding? Just because I live on the lower levels on the inside doesn't mean I don't bring in the creds. I stay here cause the rent is cheap. The apartment is even cheaper, but there's hot running water and there's a couple of student wizards who keep the place reasonably free of bugs, rats and scarier things. So I take my coffee and brick of a muffin, hand the girl a couple extra credsticks and head out to start my day.
