The Vicar’s Letter

 Dear Friends,

“My father is the gardener”

Once again we have started our courses and groups which are the preparation leading to confirmation at our Deanery service at St George’s on the 19th June.  We are delighted to have a good number of all ages (interestingly the adults outnumber the young people) who wish to take this step.  Each year time is spent discussing how these, and the rest of our membership, can be nurtured and encouraged to grow into the strong and faithful disciples who will bear ‘much fruit’.  Jesus does not use the illustration of, say, an ornamental cherry when He teaches, but a vine and a fig tree which are pruned and fed so that they will bear ‘much fruit’ (John 15 and Luke 13 verses 6 & 7) to God’s greater glory.

Jesus’ statement led me to think how much ‘disciplers’ could learn from gardeners.  I have tried to grow my own plants from seed over the years with a varying degree of success !  The right type of compost with the correct amount of water, heat and light will almost guarantee that the seeds will germinate, but then the seedlings must be nurtured carefully, pricked out and potted on !  And that’s only the beginning !  The plants must be planted in the right soil, protected, weeded around, fed etc. !

I believe that Jesus could grow things !  He used his knowledge to communicate in parables, talking of faith as tiny as a mustard seed, seeds on stony ground or being choked by brambles, and hard pruning to make old plants more fruitful - now there’s a thought !!  We need to understand His teaching and put it into practice so that our Benefice becomes a place where the healthy plants choke out the weeds and seed themselves.

We have just remembered Pentecost when the promised Holy Spirit came, and He can cause us to learn and grow very quickly.  We should all pray for His help and understanding as we begin each day to read our Bibles - God can teach us faster than any human ever can !

So, if the theory is sound, how do we put it into practice and create our own garden of Eden ?  Well, I do know the best gardener - and prayer can cause the most productive ideas to germinate !

Vida Sutton

House Group

The next meeting will be on Tuesday 8th June, 7.45 for 8.00 pm, at the home of Georgina Harford when we will be discussing the theme What God thinks of My Ambitions.  The text to be used is Matthew 6 verses 19 to 34:

Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth, where it grows rusty and moth-eaten, and thieves break in to steal it.  Store up treasure in heaven, where there is no moth and no rust to spoil it, no thieves to break in and steal.  For where your wealth is, there will your heart be also.

The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eyes are sound, you will have light for your whole body; if the eyes are bad, your whole body will be in darkness.  If then the only light you have is darkness, the darkness is doubly dark.

No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the first and love the second, or he will be devoted to the first and think nothing of the second.  You cannot serve God and Money.

Therefore I bid you put away anxious thoughts about food and drink to keep you alive, and clothes to cover your body.  Surely life is more than food, the body more than clothes.  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow and reap and store in barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  You are worth more than the birds !  Is there a man of you who by anxious thought can add a foot to his height ?  And why be anxious about clothes ?  Consider how the lilies grow in the fields; they do not work, they do not spin; and yet, I tell you, even Solomon in all his splendour was not attired like one of  these.  But if that is how God clothes the grass in the fields, which is there today, and tomorrow is thrown on the stove, will he not all the more clothe you ?  How little faith you have !  No, do not ask anxiously “What are we to eat ?  What are we to drink ? What shall we wear ?”  All these things are for the heathen to run after, not for you, because your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.  Set your mind on God’s kingdom and his justice before everything else, and all the rest will come to you as well.  So do not be anxious about tomorrow; tomorrow will look after itself.  Each day has troubles enough of its own.

All are most welcome to join us in our informal discussion of these and related issues.

The House Group

Grumbolds Ash Group

Although only three of us were able to take the trip to Bowood, the sun shone and it was just wonderful.  The ground was a stunning carpet of bluebells, and the Rhododendrons were so varied and colourful and in such a peaceful setting we thought this must be the nearest thing to heaven.

Our next trip is to the Sundial Theatre at Cirencester on 17th June to see a performance of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ which starts at 7.30 pm.  Travel arrangements to be made between members.

Bogus Callers

Bogus callers can turn up as builders, gardeners and other specialists and may try to trick you into paying for unnecessary work, possibly even before it has been done !

LOCK

Keep your front and back doors locked even when at home.

If someone calls at your door and offers to do repairs to your home or asks to come in to show you products they are selling

  STOP

Before you answer, stop and think if you are expecting a call.

Look through a spy hole or window to see who it is.

  CHAIN

If you decide to answer the call, put the chain on the door and keep it on.  Normally when the door is locked, keep the chain off so that you can leave quickly in an emergency.

Illegal Waste Disposal

Unregistered waste disposal traders are able to undercut other legal businesses by dumping waste in laybys or hedgerows.  They may advertise for work through flyers put through the letterbox, often quoting mobile phone numbers.
