The next Parish House Group meeting will take place on Tuesday 14 October at Ashcroft House at 7.45 pm for 8.00 pm.  Eight attended the first meeting in September and enjoyed a friendly but nonetheless stimulating discussion.  Governed by the availability of literature, we are now studying the gospel of St Matthew.  All parishioners will be most welcome and lifts can be arranged.

The next PCC meeting will be on Monday  20 October at 8.00 pm in the Village Hall.

The Waller family will be moving from Kingscote around the end of October, and the PCC wish to thank Richard for the big contribution which he has made during his all too short a time with us.

The Vicar’s Letter

 Dear Friends,

I was trying to get this letter finished all afternoon as Harry was going away for several days and wanted to ‘put the magazine to bed’, but I just couldn’t seem to get on with it.  In mitigation, I had a man here servicing the boiler and I was making cups of  coffee and being sociable !  He is a committed Atheist - he does not believe in God - and we always have good discussions.  I have a sense of failure as I cannot provide him with the right reasons to help him change his mind.  And now I had an added sense of frustration because I knew Harry was waiting for this missive !

For many of us, life is a mixture of successes and failures, of achievements and disappointments.  How we pass through life depends, to some extent, on whether we dwell on the former or the latter.  Do we see the glass half full or half empty ?!

While I am naturally a positive person, my Christian faith helps me be even more so !  I may not be able to do or achieve something but ‘in Christ’  all things are possible.  This means when people and God work together so much more can be accomplished.  At our last PCC meeting we agreed to allocate £1000 of our income for charitable purposes.  It was agreed to give the proceeds of our Harvest Supper on 18 September to Water Aid once more, and the proceeds of our Animal Service on 16 November to Christian Aid to buy goats for Burundi (£12 each).  Through initiatives like this we are able to make a difference.

What is an Animal Service ?  It is a special service when people bring their animals to church  (if they are very big they may be tethered outside) and we offer our thanksgiving to God for all creatures and bring them forward for a blessing !  Please mark this date in your diary.

While the diary is out, why not see if there are other dates when you could come to church ?   I guarantee all will be made very welcome, and the more of us there are, the bigger the difference we can make !

The Reverend Stephen Earley

P.S.

Many thanks to Sandy, Brooks and all their helpers, together with all who supported our Car Boot Sale and helped to raise over £520 for church funds - an excellent result.

Sunday Club

We experienced a bountiful harvest of blackberries in September when we made our delicious crumble-pies.  We shall continue the theme of harvest in October as the Cox family have kindly provided us with samples of Hazlecote farm’s produce.  Hope to see you at the Village Hall at 11.00 am on Sunday 12 October.

Flower and Clean Team

The next session for making the church shine will be on Wednesday 8th October at 2.30 pm.

Grumbolds Ash Group

We had to change our venue on the 12th September as we found that Blenheim had a horse show for that very weekend.  However we were not disappointed when we decided to go to Malmesbury Abbey Gardens instead, which we found absolutely delightful.  We rounded off the trip by having a very enjoyable meal at the Cat & Custard Pot at Shipton Moyne.

The next outing will be to Westobirt Arboretum on 7th October, all meeting at the Village Hall at 10.30 am.

Birthday Thanks

I would like to thank everyone for thinking of me on my 80th  birthday.  Your thoughtful wishes were most appreciated.

Car Boot Sale

The delightful summer of 2003 continued well into mid-September and the weather was fine for the Car Boot Sale on the 14th.  Our thanks go first to Hunters Hall for its continued support and, new this year, a self-service hot beverage bar.  Buyers and sellers made their way to Kingscote guided by professional signs from TLVisuals Ltd in Yate (better known to us as Rod and Jenny Tibbert).  A small army of entry and parking assistants in fluorescent jackets directed the flow of buyers to Ron Walkers paddock and field, and there was just enough space in the parking area for 37 stalls.  No congestion developed on the roads around the village and the crowd was manageable.  In truth this was partly because the number of buyers was down by 30% over last year, although the number of sellers was up 54%.  Gross proceeds will be in excess of  £520.

We would like to thank those who donated cakes and household goods for their thoughtfulness and generosity, and stall-holders and buyers from the village for their support and convivial spirit.  Last but not least, our heartfelt gratitude goes to the volunteers who came out on Sunday to make the event a smooth and successful fund-raiser.

Congress Tart:  If the person who brought two of these tarts for the cake stall at the car boot sale would be willing to divulge the recipe I should like to have it -  they are delicious !   Sue Bradley-Jones  (Tel. See paper version of Forerunner).

Village Hall Activities

Many thanks to everyone who contributed prizes, made food, cleared up and participated in so many ways to make the Greek Night on 20th September such a resounding success.  Suggestions for other similar themed evenings will be welcomed by members of the Village Hall Committee.

Alice Cooper

Youth Club

The youth club members wish to give a big thank you to the PCC for their generous donation of £50 from the proceeds of the Jazz Evening.  This went towards a fun-filled day at Cattle Country in Berkeley on Sunday 21 September.

Dry Humour

Some nice little jokes were published in the Independent newspaper on 24 August 2003:

            My credit card was stolen,

but it’s OK because the thief is spending less than me.

            Sometimes I wake up grumpy,

but most of the time I let him sleep.

I want to die in my sleep like grandpa,

            not screaming like his passengers.

I asked if I was a gifted child,

and Dad said he wouldn’t have paid.

            Animal testing is terrible,

because they get nervous and give the wrong answers.
