The first Parish House Group meeting will take place on Tuesday 9 September at Ashcroft House at 7.45 pm for 8.00 pm.  This is intended to be an informal unstructured gathering at which those present discuss what they want to discuss.  However in order to give some focus and direction we will be studying the gospel of St Mark.  All parishioners will be most welcome.

The next PCC meeting will be on Monday  15 September at 8.00 pm in the Village Hall.

The Vicar’s Letter

Dear Friends,

Doesn’t time fly when you are enjoying yourself ?!

A year ago, on Sunday 1st September, I conducted my first services in this newly united benefice as your vicar - 8 am at Horsley (followed by coffee and bacon rolls, which I thought was their regular practice but it hasn’t happened since !) followed by a 9.30 am at Nailsworth and then dashing to an 11 am at Kingscote.  At each of these churches and at Shortwood we have been very warmly welcomed; so many people and names to remember, and different ways of doing things in each place.

The first year presents a very steep learning curve for all of us - all ministers and congregations are different and we all have our foibles.  I have tried to continue to run services in a way that you could relate to, whilst introducing some variations.  But September always strikes me as a time of new beginnings, in some ways more so than the New Year.

This has developed following my own school days when September meant at least some new item of clothing and talk of a new school year - does ‘could try harder’ ring bells with anyone ?!  When my own six children started going to school, we had a tradition of taking a picture of them in all their new finery standing at the front door.   Great Expectations !

As has been referred to in recent issues, we now have ‘new boys’ in our team - Jeff and Laurie, Sue is now a Reader and Mick will be joining us for two months.  In Nailsworth we have our Mums & Toddlers, and Open the Book, in Kingscote a newly formed House Group will be meeting.  I hope that Horsley will develop its Village Service and unearth some musicians, will embrace Jeff and Sue as they live among them, and that church, school and community will grow ever closer as we await the results of the Feasibility Study for the proposed church building modifications.

We are now discussing whether a monthly evening Songs of Praise service, moving around the three larger churches in our Benefice would be something which people would appreciate, and we will work on this idea soon.

Our Local Ministry Team is due to be re-mandated in March, and this is causing us to review it and agree priorities for the next four years.   We do need more members to join the team, and our ‘lay ministry’ is important for our whole benefice.  Is God calling anyone reading this to take a more active part in church life ?  I am sure He is and if you answer the call, life will be full of surprises !

This commences on 5 September at 9.15 am at St George’s church.  Limited parking at the church.

Sunday Club

There will be a car boot sale on 14 September, so there will not be a Sunday Club meeting on that day.  If anyone would like to join us for a ‘hedgerow walk’ to collect items and then make a pie, please let Elin (Tel. See paper version of Forerunner) know by Tuesday 2 September.  Proposed date of walk and pie making:  Sunday 7 September 11.00 am, meeting at 3 Boxwood Close.

Our next church cleaning session will be on Wednesday 10 September at 2.30 pm.

On 8 August we had lovely weather for our trip to the Dutch Water Garden which was completely different to any thing which we have visited before - lots of unusual plants and the water lilies were perfect.  We had a super lunch at the Red Hart a few miles further down the road at Blaisdon.

Our next trip, planned for 12 September, will be equally exciting when we visit Blenheim Palace and Gardens.  We will leave at 9.30 am prompt from the Village Hall.

Gardens Open for the Red Cross

This summer will be remembered for its heat and sun, and it is hard to recall that the end of July was excessively wet.

Successive days of torrential rain leading up to July 27th had the spirits dampened and expectations low for the event, but once again we were incredibly lucky on the day.  A bright sunny afternoon brought the visitors in even greater numbers than ever and they all seemed very happy with Kingscote - twelve gardens this time, all for £3, plants to buy and a first class tea laid on with copious homemade cakes.  The parking situation became critical mid-afternoon (sorry to those who felt besieged) but thanks to being able to open up two fields in the village we avoided gridlock.

In 1995 we raised £210 for the Red Cross from the entrance money.  This year it has gone up to £2370 - with about 700 visitors.  A further £451 was generated by the teas, which has been split equally between the Village Hall and the Church.

A wonderful result.  On July 28th it poured with rain all day again.

Many thanks to those who helped in the churchyard on the morning of August 2nd.  The temperature was tolerable and good progress was made in removing brushwood and wild saplings.  Several old monuments were revealed !

Sponsored Ride or Walk

This annual event aimed at raising funds for church preservation will take place on Saturday 13th September.  Money raised by individuals is split between the Historic Churches Trust and a church of their choice.  Sponsorship forms and further details available from Sue Bradley-Jones (Tel. See paper version of Forerunner).

Car Boot Sale (Please see below )

On Sunday 14 September between 9.00 am and 12 noon, Hunters Hall will once again be the setting for Kingscote’s Car Boot Sale, this year in aid of the churchyard improvement scheme.  The village ought not to be overrun with cars as Ron Walker has kindly offered the use of his paddock and field for overflow parking.  Nevertheless, apologies are made I advance to those who are inconvenienced by temporary congestion at the junctions near Hunters Hall.  Offers of assistance with traffic control and parking, especially between 9.00 and 11.00 am, would be very much appreciated by Brooks Childress (Tel. See paper version of Forerunner).

The car boot sale is the ideal place to unburden yourself of all those things you’ve been meaning to sort out - books and tapes, outgrown children’s wear and toys, tools and sports equipment, china and collectibles.  Last year we had 28 sellers, several from the parish, and we hope that there will be many more this year !  If you are interested in being a seller but are unsure about pricing things, don’t worry as buyers are usually happy to suggest a price for that unusual or unexpected item you no longer require.  Picnic tables are available on site by reservation to display your wares, so you won’t have to bring a table.

In addition to individual tables from near and far, we will again have a Community Stall selling a unique variety of items donated by members of the parish, and a Cake Stall featuring delicious creations from village kitchens.  Donations for both will be most welcome !  Donations for the Community Stall must be made in advance.  Please ring Sandy Childress (Tel. See paper version of Forerunner) who will be happy to collect your items after 8 September or to answer any queries.

 Village Hall Activities

Maintenance and Painting Day:  Very many thanks to those people who gave their time and donated materials for the repair and maintenance day at the Village Hall which took place on Saturday 16th August.  The Village Hall is now very much brighter and in a much better state of repair.

Boundary Walk and BBQ:  The planned Boundary Walk which was due to take place on Sunday 10th August was cancelled due to the very hot weather and the limited number of people who would have been able to attend.  This will be rescheduled for the autumn.

Greek Evening:  On Saturday 20th September at 7.30 pm a ‘Greek Evening’ will be held in the Village Hall.  Food and wine will be provided; wine will be on sale.  Full details will be circulated to villagers closer to the date.
