The
Vicar’s Letter
Dear Friends,
“So the word of
God spread. The number of
disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became
obedient to the faith.” Acts 6
v. 7.
Well, to our ears this must sound like a resounding success to a strategy for growth and management of the Church adopted by the Apostles, and we should all be eager to know what strategy they had adopted to encourage this !
As the Church grew, various aspects of administration started to reduce the time the Apostles could give to prayer and the ministry of the word - specifically the distribution of food to certain widows, but it could have been any number of things. So the Church chose seven men ‘full of the Spirit and wisdom’. This did not mean that they considered the distribution of food to widows unimportant or that such a task was beneath them, but rather that there were among them others who had the appropriate gifts to carry out this important task while they concentrated on what they were commissioned to do - preach and pray.
As the Church grew over the centuries, this vital principle was lost and the priests seemed to, on occasions, do everything ! As the number of people putting themselves forward for stipendiary (ie full-time paid) ministry has fallen, the Church has rediscovered this principle of sharing out many of the tasks among the Church family. Primarily this is to enable priests who take the responsibility for for an increasing number of parishes to manage - and in so doing has begun to use the God given gifts that everyone has for the benefit of the Church. Also the ministries of non-stipendiary ministers, lay readers, and Local Ministry Teams have become more valued.
I am delighted by the number of different people in this united benefice who carry out so many tasks. We have identified areas of ministry that would be much improved if others helped, and I hope with the Local Ministry Team at St George’s to identify the steps necessary to create further small teams to develop these ministries. Several other opportunities for ministry are mentioned below.
Do please talk to me if you think there is an area of
ministry where you could help or that we are not covering at present, or if
you have identified a gift or skill in someone else that they may be unaware
of. As these ministries are
established and “the
word of God spreads” who
knows what will happen ?!

Altar
Guild
Owing to lack of numbers we are now in the throes of winding down the Altar Guild. We will however carry on cleaning the church, so it will be ‘goodbye to the Altar Guild and hello to the Flower and Clean team’. The team will initially consist of Iris Shorey, Jo Spash, Joan Wagner, Elizabeth Trigg and myself. We say a big thank you to Gill James who has been our treasurer for more years than I can remember.
Just for the record, the Altar Guild was started 45 years ago by Marjorie Nichols and every year a donation was made to a local charity. So to everyone who has been involved over the years, Well Done !
Our next cleaning session will be on the 9th July at 2.30
pm.

Ash Group
Our evening walk at Frampton-on-Severn was very pleasant even though the weather was a bit blustery for June ! A cricket match was in full swing on the Village Green and the lovely sound of leather on willow filled our ears as we strolled by. Incidently this is the longest village green in England. We rounded off the evening with supper at the Bell Inn.
Our next event is a barbecue in Jane Bateman’s lovely garden. This will take place on Tuesday 15th July at 7.00 pm when we will all have our fingers crossed for sunshine.

Parish Council
The Annual General Meeting and the next Parish Council Meeting will take place in The Village Hall at 8.00 pm on 7 July. The Editor apologises for stating in the June magazine that the Parish Council Accounts recently displayed were for the year to 31 March 2003, when in fact they were for 2002.
Village Hall
Activities
Youth Club continues: On Friday evenings during the summer term between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm a youth club will meet in the Village Hall. All those between 10 and 14 years of age resident in the parish will be welcomed. The Youth Club continues until Friday 18th July. Admission will cost £1 per person per session.
Boundary Walk and BBQ: A walk around part of the Parish Boundary will take place on Sunday 10th August. The walk will last about 1 1/2 hrs and will be followed by a BBQ at the Village Hall. Please join us for the walk and the BBQ or for just part of the day. More details to follow later.
Maintenance and Painting Day: The Village Hall needs a lick of paint ! Anyone interested in helping to paint and do minor repairs will be very welcome on Saturday 16th August from 10.00 am.

Gardens Open
for the Red Cross
On Sunday 27th July between 2.00 and 6.00 pm Kingscote will once again be opening some of its gardens as part of Gloucestershire’s Open Gardens scheme in aid of the Red Cross.
If we are as successful as on previous occasions the village will be a bit overrun on that afternoon, so apologies in advance for any inconvenience to residents. The Hunters Hall will again kindly let visitors use their car park, which should keep most of the cars out of the village.
Anyone who is interested but unsure about opening their garden, don’t be shy ! The more that are open the happier the visitors will be. They are not expecting perfection and are appreciative of gardens great and small. Half the fun in coming to a village like Kingscote is finding out what lies on the other side of the garden gates.
Teas will be served in the Village Hall and the proceeds from this will be shared between the hall and the church. Any donations of cakes and/or help on the day would be greatly appreciated.
Please contact Sue Bradley-Jones (Tel. See paper version of Forerunner) if you wish to enter your garden, to offer plants for sale, cakes or with any queries. Please note that the final programme of gardens open will be issued only a day or so before the event, so if unforeseen problems arise you can withdraw !

Join us on Saturday 2nd August at 9.30 am to battle with ivy, brambles and overgrown undergrowth. The more help the merrier ! Please bring clippers, pruning shears, gloves etc. and some plastic sacks to take rubbish away. The horse-flies seem quite voracious this year, so some insect repellent may be a good investment.
