The PCC were delighted to see some 75 people, mainly from the parish, at the Thanksgiving on 18th May.  We hope that everyone enjoyed it as much as we did, and we thank all who came.

The PCC wish to record their gratitude to the Altar Guild who have most generously donated a powerful de-humidifier and a new vacuum cleaner for the church.  A truly magnificent contribution.

We now have a Video of the Royal Maundy Service and arrangements will be made to show it in the Village Hall.

The next PCC meeting will be on Monday  9 June at 8.00 pm in the Village Hall.

The Vicar’s Letter

 Dear Friends,

One of the good things about remembering the seasons in the church calendar, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Pentecost etc. is that we regularly remind ourselves of the important facts of the Christian faith - the basic tenets that make it different from other faiths.  It is so easy to slowly sink into a mire of uncertainty which accepts the growing belief in some quarters that all faiths lead to God, that everyone will be saved and go to Heaven and that God will never turn His back on anyone.

Christmas reminds us that God chose to reveal Himself to us in the form of Jesus;  God by His grace reaching down to us, to save us from the penalty that our sins deserve and to bring us the promise of eternal life.  Lent leads us into a time of remembering the things we have got wrong, saying sorry and asking His forgiveness.   Easter is ‘make your mind up time’ - Jesus died on the Cross and then rose again; brought back to life by the power of the Holy Spirit.  This is a historical fact and to deny it is, I believe, really no different to saying in two thousand years time that the second World War never happened !

And so to Pentecost, when we remember how God the Holy Spirit filled all those who were assembled with transforming power.  They became bold and courageous, where they had been frightened and fearful, and they spoke with passionate conviction because they  knew  that the fact of the Resurrection was  true; they had seen the risen Lord with their own eyes and nothing anyone could say would, or will, ever change this truth.

When the Holy Spirit fills anyone (by invitation only !) He still gives this passionate conviction and a freedom, for ‘where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom’.  God never turns His back on anyone but many choose to ignore Him.   If you haven’t already, why not invite Him to be part of your life.  He brings more ‘Va va voom’  into your life than a car ever can  !!

The Reverend Stephen Earley

Home Communion

We hope to start a monthly round of communion at home for all who are unable to get to our churches.  This would be taken out by the vicar and others authorised to do so.   We do need a coordinator who can ring round each month to generate a rota, and if you wish to receive communion at home or know someone who might, please call the vicar Tel (See paper version of Forerunner)

Confirmation

This year confirmations will take place at Tetbury Parish Church on 14th November.  What is Confirmation ?  is a question often asked.

It is the time when a person   confirms  the promises made by their parents and Godparents when they were babies at their baptism.  The general rule is that one should not receive Holy Communion until one has been confirmed, although there can be exceptions.  Everyone who is old enough to make decisions for themselves must decide if they wish to be a follower of Jesus and do something about it.  There is no upper age limit, and where necessary it can be preceded by baptism if that sacrament was missed in childhood.

It is probably the most important decision a person makes in their lifetime and affects how they live the rest of their lives.  If you would like to be confirmed, please call the vicar for more information Tel. (See paper version of Forerunner).

Sunday Club

Thank you to those children who beavered away to produce our lovely ‘Thank you’ sign for the celebration on 18th May.  Janet and Jenny have activities planned for all age groups at the next meeting which will be on the 8th June at 11.00 am in the Village Hall.

Janet Davies and Elin Tattersall

Altar Guild

We will meet in the church at 2.30 pm on Wednesday 11th June for a cleaning session.  As our old vacuum cleaner is on its last legs, we have bought a strong new one which will do a much better job.

Grumbolds Ash Group

On May 12th we spent a wonderful day at Slimbridge Wild Fowl Trust.  The weather forecast was not good but luck was on our side and it did not start raining until we were leaving for home.

There is a wonderful tapestry, depicting many of the wild fowl, hanging just outside the restaurant.  It was designed by two ladies who took it all over the country encouraging people to make a stitch along with a donation, which raised quite a lot of money.

Inside the restaurant we enjoyed a delicious lunch, and outside the birds kept us entertained with their capers.  There is also a super education room for children which is great fun for them.

The time went all too quickly and we intend to go again early next year.

Our next trip will be on the evening of Tuesday 10th June when we will take a canal walk at Frampton-on-Severn, followed by a pub supper.  We will meet at the Village Hall at 6.00 pm.

Floodlighting in Churchyard

Kingscote residents may have noticed that we seem now to have overcome the problem with the colour of the illumination, which is now quite a nice warm golden-white.  The Ward Grant of £700 has been received from the CDC, and it is presently proposed that the system should be operated from dusk to 10.30 pm in the Summer and until 9.30 pm in the winter on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
