The Vicar?s Letter
Dear Friends,
When Jesus began his ministry among the Jews, the rabbis had ?developed? the Law to such an extent that 613 individual statutes could be numbered - and they attempted to differentiate between ?heavy? (or ?great?) and ?light? (or little?) commands ! So when Jesus was asked, ?Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law ?? (Matthew 22 v 36- ) it really was a difficult question ! But Jesus went back to basics and responded with the words known as the Shema (Deuteronomy 6 v 4- ) which had become the Jewish confession of faith which is recited by pious Jews every morning and evening.
?Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all
your soul and with all your mind.? - and they really could not argue with that
- and he then added the second,
One of the set readings on my first Sunday here introduced the theme of Love and so this led me to begin my ministry here preaching around the theme of the two greatest commandments that Jesus taught were at the heart of what we are called to do. It does seem that if we follow these two commandments, then everything else will fall into place.
As your new neighbours my family and I have received a tremendous welcome and we sense the love that exists in all of the churches in this new united Benefice. I believe that if we all continue in this way and work together for the common good, then our churches will steadily grow in faith and in numbers - to the glory of Him who we seek to follow and serve together.
The Service Rota:
We are all realising that I cannot be in four places at once and I am very aware of the need to maintain appropriate services in each of our four churches. Each one is different and has its own style and emphasis with regard to worship. The rota which has been agreed between the PCC?s is workable but may need some ?tweaking? as we proceed.
We will be discussing in our PCC?s any variations that may be acceptable to all. An occasional united service at St George?s, St Martin?s and St John?s has been suggested. Each magazine could adopt the practice at Kingscote and publish the full calendar of services for the benefice in the month ahead. Please be patient as we endeavour to settle on a system that is to everyone?s benefit.
The Reverend Stephen Earley
Notice for Flower
Arrangers on the Church Flower Rota
JACARANDA FLOWERS, the flower shop in Nailsworth, has very kindly said that we can choose flowers for church arrangements on Saturdays after 2.30 pm and that they will not charge for them. For obvious reasons you should be prepared to give your name and affiliation. Sometimes there may not be any left-overs at the end of the week, so it would be best to telephone the shop to check availability (speak to Karen) before setting off. There is no obligation to take up this kind offer if you have an alternative source of flowers or if Saturday afternoon is too late for making your arrangements.

A reminder that we shall be making some harvest loaves from

Altar Guild
We were very pleased to welcome Elizabeth Trigg to our church cleaning team on 11th September and we were also delighted to meet the Reverend Stephen Earley who popped in to see us.
Our next session will be on 9th October at 2.30 pm in the church as usual.
The Coffee Morning this year will be on 16th November from
10 am to 12 noon in the Village Hall.
We will very much appreciate homemade cakes. More details of this in the November magazine.

Grumbolds Ash Group
We did not have the best of weather for our trip to Dyram Park on 9th September so our viewing was mostly confined to the house, which was very interesting. A shuttle bus was available to take us through the park where we had a sighting of the beautiful deer roaming around.
Our next event is a skittles evening at the Cross Inn at Avening. This will take place on 8th October, and we will meet up at the Village Hall at 6.45 pm.

Car Boot Sale
The second car boot sale sponsored by the PCC was held in perfect weather on 8th September at Hunters Hall. The generosity and involvement of the entire community was very apparent and contributed to the good atmosphere and overall success of the event. (Apologies to those who were inconvenienced by traffic control at Bagpath Lane and by the overflow parking into the village.) Donations of cakes, plants and items for the Community Stall were gratefully received and raised £300. Several villagers had their own stalls and gave some or all of their proceeds to the event raising £118. The loan of tables from the Village Hall was much appreciated. Many thanks to all, and especially to the hardy band of helpers who were involved in the preparations and who assisted on the morning. All may take pride in helping to raise a total of just over £680.
Sandy Childress
On behalf of the PCC a big thank you to Sandy and Brooks for their leading role in this successful event. We have all learned a bit from them about organisation !

Harvest Supper
This year?s Harvest Supper will take place on Saturday 5 October at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. Those who attended last year will remember that with considerable trepidation we launched our Appeal 2001 for restoration funds, and words can hardly describe how thankful the members of the PCC are now for the wonderful generosity which has ensued. We have decided to keep the arrangements the same as last year, although of course there is no appeal :
The meal will comprise a drink on arrival, main course and dessert
followed by tea or coffee.
Experience shows that people prefer to bring their own drinks to
accompany the meal, but water and glasses will be provided.
Tickets priced at £6 for adults and £4 for under 16?s will be available
after 24 September from Philip Kendell (Bagpath), Harry Tubbs (Kingscote), and The Post Office.
Any profit from the event will go towards the international charity Water Aid.
The PCC
Never used a Computer - now is your chance to have a go !
There is still time to take advantage of this unique and stress-free opportunity. Anyone who would like to try (without any cost or obligation) should talk to Sharon Hodgkins. If there is sufficient interest an IT ?tasting? session can be set up, for example in the Village Hall.
Church Floodlighting
In March we reported on the plan to install permanent floodlighting in the churchyard, so that we can enjoy again the nice view of the normally gloomy north side of the church on winter evenings. Subsequently we have been allocated £700 from the Cotswold District Council Ward Projects fund and we are now proceeding with the process of gaining official approval.
We propose to have one light by the Lych Gate, one light on the north boundary facing the main door, and one light on the north east corner of the roof of the Lady Chapel. All of the work requires approval by the Diocese, and the light on the roof also requires Planning Permission.
We hope to start the work by the end of October so that it can be completed in time to submit our invoices to the CDC before March 2003 when the Ward Grant expires. Presently we do not have sufficient money for the light on the roof, which may have to wait.

Poppy Appeal 2002
Parishioners living in the Hazelcote/Calcot districts please note that we have been unable to find a collector in your areas so you should use collecting boxes at Hunters Hall or Calcot Manor for your contributions. These will be in place at the end of October.

Mobile Police Station
The Mobile Police Station will visit Kingscote between 1.30 and 2.00 pm on 16th October and during the evening on 27th October.
Post Office
The Post Office is open on every normal working Tuesday and Thursday :
from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm and from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm.
The Royal Mail have reminded users that provided that the
Post town (in our case TETBURY) and the Post code are given, it is no longer
necessary to quote the County. Also
commas and full stops should be avoided and the lines in the address should not
be staggered. The Post town should be
written in CAPITALS. (Thank you Sandy for keeping us up to date.)
Mobile Library
The mobile library will be by The Walled Garden from 9.40 am to 9.55 am on Thursdays Oct 3rd, 17th and 31st.
Waste Recycling
The boxes will be emptied as follows:
Newington and Bagpath - Mon. 14th and 28th Oct.
Kingscote - Tues. 1st, 15th and 29th Oct.
