The Vicar?s Letter
Dear All,
By the time you read this I will have been installed as Vicar of Nailsworth with Shortwood, Horsley and Newington Bagpath with Kingscote. My wife Helen, my family and myself are delighted to be here ! We have already been warmly welcomed and I am very much looking forward to meeting many old friends and making many new ones. We feel as if we have come home, having lived and worked in Stroud for a good number of years before I became a priest.
I consider myself very blessed that I have four lovely churches, and want everyone to know that I am willing to serve them in whatever situation they find themselves in need of a minister - I will do my very best to help you.
We have been reading the Forerunner since my appointment and are encouraged by all that has been going on. We look forward to being part of your community. Harry Tubbs has been most helpful in keeping me advised of all that has been happening and I congratulate everyone in raising so much to enable the repairs to your lovely and historic church to begin. We look forward to meeting you all in church and at community events, and to the exciting things that I believe God has in store for your special community.
I look forward to seeing you all very soon and thank those who have kept the church running smoothly while you have been waiting for your new minister.
The Reverend Stephen Earley
Synod News from York
There was an air of generosity and openness about the General Synod sessions meeting at York this July. There were positive feelings expressed about Anglican Methodist Unity. There was unusually and unexpectedly wide approval for opening up changes in marriage law to take account of a more mobile population, so that residence in a parish will no longer be the sole qualification for marriage in church, but ?demonstrable connection?. The minister or ?celebrant? of the marriage, rather than the place, will provide the effective legal basis of the marriage for both church and state. There was also widespread support for making provision for further marriages (i.e. following the breakdown of a previous marriage) to take place in church.

Sunday Club
From the beginning of September our Sunday Club will meet on the 2nd Sunday of the month (instead of the 1st Sunday) due to the changed church service pattern in Kingscote. However on 8th September, instead of the normal club meeting in the Village Hall, we are asking members to volunteer some time to run a Sunday Club stall in the Car Boot Sale at Hunters Hall. If you have any items to sell or can help to run the stall, please contact Elin.

Harvest Loaf 2002 - helpers
needed
This year?s Harvest Loaf will be shared at the Harvest Supper (i.e. EATEN not just displayed !). We are aiming for 40-60 pieces so will need a lot of help in order to make it. Those children in the parish who are able to help, please get in touch with Elin. The plan is to prepare the loaf between 10 am and 11am on Saturday 5 October before the Harvest Supper. Thank you !
Altar Guild
We have given the church a good going over, and the carpet cleaning was entirely down to Joan Wagner who quietly popped across on a sunny day and did it very successfully. Well done Joan !
Our next meeting will be in the Church at 2.30 pm on
Wednesday 11 September. Our working party is shrinking all the time: Is there anyone out there willing to give a
hand with our monthly cleaning ? We
look forward to seeing you on September 11th.

Grumbolds Ash Group
Thirteen of us enjoyed a splendid barbecue on a beautiful evening on 21 August. Our thanks are due to Jane and Gordon Bateman for excellent fare and a fine location in their immaculate garden.
Our next event is a visit to the National Trust house and park at Dyram, where we plan to have lunch. Meet at the Village Hall at 10.30 am on Monday 9 September when we will decide on car sharing.

Car Boot Sale -
Sunday 8 September
We are hoping for better weather this time and we really
need more SELLERS. Last time, as a result of the generosity of parishioners,
the produce stall was very successful - please help again anyone who
can. It is believed that edible home
produce sells better if a list of ingredients is attached - certainly this
helps with calorie counting and allergy watching. If you do not wish to set up
your own stall, contribute surplus possessions to the community stall. You will feel much better when you have
cleared out all that stuff which you never use, and both you and the church
can benefit financially. Any questions
ring Sandy Childress.
Sonsored Bike Ride
This year?s event takes place on Saturday 14th September and as usual half of the monies raised will go towards the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust (which has contributed generously to our restoration appeal) and half towards a church of the participants? choice.
Those wishing to take part please contact Sue Bradley-Jones for details and sponsorship form.
Liberty and
Livelihood March
The Countryside Alliance is organising a March for Liberty and Livelihood in London on Sunday 22nd September, to draw attention to the threat to the countryside from the crisis in farming and the proposals to criminalise hunting with hounds. A number of buses will be leaving from local departure points for the march. The Berkeley Hunt will have at least one bus leaving from Hunters Hall, and the Beaufort and Wick and District Beagles will be leaving from Long Newnton and Wotton under Edge. If you would like to take part in the march, please ring Tim Sage for information. It is hoped to exceed the 30,000 people who were present at the last march. If you are unable to attend the march, but would like to show your support, you can do this by adding your name to a list of supporters.
Meningitis Trust 5 Valleys Walk
This year?s walk takes place on Sunday 22nd September during the period between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm and explores some of the beautiful scenery and valleys around Stroud. Participants may complete whatever of 12 sections of the 21 miles round trip route they wish, and between 11.00 am and 5.30 pm a free bus service will operate to help them along when required. Refreshments will be available at some of the checkpoints. There is a registration fee for the walk of £3 per adult and £8 per family, and sponsorship forms are available to help participants to raise as much money as possible for the work of the Meningitis Trust. Those wishing further information and/or to enrol contact Kate Walker.
Harvest Supper
This year?s Harvest Supper will take place on Saturday 5 October at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. Those who attended last year will remember that with considerable trepidation we launched our Appeal 2001 for restoration funds, and words can hardly describe how thankful the members of the PCC are now for the wonderful generosity which has ensued. We have decided to keep the arrangements the same as last year, although of course there is no appeal :
The meal will comprise a drink on arrival, main course and dessert
followed by tea or coffee.
Experience shows that people prefer to bring their own drinks to
accompany the meal, but water and glasses will be provided.
Tickets priced at £6 for adults and £4 for under 16?s will be available
after 24 September from Philip Kendell (Bagpath), Harry Tubbs (Kingscote), and The Post Office.
Any profit from the event will go towards general church running costs.
The PCC
Never used a Computer - now is your chance to have a go !
Anyone who would like to try without any cost or obligation should talk to Sharon Hodgkins. If there is sufficient interest an IT ?tasting? session can be set up, for example in the Village Hall.

The Mobile Police Station will visit Kingscote between 1.30 and 2.00 pm on 18th September.
Post Office
The Post Office is open on every normal working Tuesday and Thursday :
from 9.00
am to 1.00 pm and from
2.30 pm to 5.30 pm.
Mobile Library
