The Curry Evening

All who attended this most enjoyable gathering on 27th April (over 40 present) will wish to join in thanking the Village Hall management committee and their helpers for their initiative and hard work in putting on the event.  The dishes were delicious, the environment delightful, and it is a good example of the pleasures of living in a small community and of the value of our village hall.

The Car Boot Sale

This was a new departure for the PCC, approached with some trepidation, but it proved an effective way of raising some extra ‘housekeeping’ funds.  14 sellers staked out their pitch in the Hunters Hall car park on Sunday 28th April and had a steady stream of buyers all morning.  Some of the sellers - including village children - were kind enough to donate their takings, and the stall of donated cakes and plants did brisk business.  Together with the entrance charges, we made a net total of £377.  We thank the Hunters Hall and all our helpers for their contribution.  We hope to run a similar event in September, so please start stockpiling those valuable surplus items from the back of the cupboard in anticipation.

Churchyard

We thank several people who have contributed generously or have undertaken to contribute  to the purchase of a replacement mower.  The treasurer has reported that we are now in a position to proceed when necessary.  Strangely the old mower is now a model of reliability - it must realise that its bluff has been called !

The two oak gates forming the Lychgate have finally started to disintegrate and Brian Hillam has kindly agreed to investigate making some new ones.  This is a major task, complicated by the massive iron-work on the gates.

On behalf of the mowing team we ask again that residents prevent dogs fouling the churchyard.

Church Fabric Restoration Appeal

Excellent progress has been achieved on the Fabric Appeal with a grant of £7,000 from The Historic Churches Preservation Trust and a grant of £3,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation.  Congratulations to Georgina Harford and her helpers on these brilliant results, and of course huge thanks to the charities concerned for their support.  This leaves some £9,188 to find to reach our original target.

The PCC

The Historic Churches Preservation Trust

The work of this Trust is not well known and as we are recent major beneficiaries a short explanation is appropriate in this issue of our parish magazine.

It was set up as a registered charity in 1953 to assist in the repair of churches and chapels of all denominations in England and Wales, and it does this through grants and interest-free loans.  In recent years the Trust has been receiving nearly 2,000 applications annually and has made awards totalling about £1,400,000 to approximately 400 churches each year.

However the Trust itself is very dependent on voluntary donations, and is unable to do as much as it would like due to funding limitations.  For example recent average repair bills faced by parishes were about £55,000, but the average award was only £2,500.  In order to help maintain the work of the Trust,  most grants (including the large grant which we have received) are given on condition that the parish contributes something back to the Trust during the subsequent 7 years.  The PCC have now therefore to consider and decide how much our contribution can be.

Some literature is available in the church giving more information on the work of the HCPT, and anyone who would like to make a personal contribution to its work can make contact on Tel: 020 7736 3054.

Conclusion

For some reason this month’s magazine seems to be a lot about fund raising !   Perhaps we should remind ourselves what it is all about:

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power,

                        the glory, the splendour, and the majesty;

for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.

                        All things come from you,

and of your own do we give you.    Amen.
